Review: No one is born into the ideal or perfect life, and we all fall but the few are given the ability, strength, and determination to pull themselves up to change their lives, and even less care about humanity enough to share their dirty secrets with the world. Trevor Kleinhans is an inspiration, he struggles to meet the ideal perfection led him to eventually give up and choose a life of sex, drugs, and lies, but then one day and with great self reflection he chose to change his world and the world of those around him. This is a story documenting the struggles of being a young gay man in a place of great hatred and depression, and overcoming that only to be met with lives greatest struggle.. ourselves.

Trevor shares his story of how even when life seems at its lowest there is never a need to give up and life will never end it only lives on. His love for himself, his family, and those he loves is endless, and his pain to find someone to share that love will leave you questioning why such an amazing man has had to go through so much. Love is the greatest gift of life, and even if we might not all acquire the love we deserve Trevor proves there is no reason to stop trying and to believe in the strength of yourself and those around you. As disappointing as life can sometimes be it is up to us to make the world the place we want to live and open ourselves to receiving the love of others. Trevor is an inspiration for anyone who straggles, not just gay men, those with HIV, or anyone who had struggled with an addiction, he is an inspiration that there is a light in us all we just need to release it and follow our heart for right or wrong. We can all learn a lesson from Trevor and reflect to become the men and women we all wish we could become.

Review: It’s hard to read Trevor Kleinhans’ book ‘Secrets Make You Sick’ without getting all teary-eyed, especially if you have a loved one or a friend who suffered through a similar addiction. Trevor is one of the rarest personalities I’ve ever encountered in the self-publishing universe of Kindle: he’s the real deal—he’s looked back into his past, dredging it for whatever lessons it’s worth, if only to give us and future generations something compelling to learn from.

A victim of childhood sexual abuse, Trevor was a walking time bomb in the 1980s South Africa—it was only a matter of time until his still unresolved trauma resurfaced to make him not only receptive to the lure of illicit drugs, but also willing to try everything. Add to that are the temptations that the vibrant gay urban scene in South Africa in the 1980s throw to reel in someone like Trevor, and it’s all a setting for the kind of heart-breaking struggle you only otherwise see in the movies. By the time you finish reading the book, you realize Trevor had no chance—he’s a child of his time, and it’s probably sheer luck or fortune to actually survive crack addiction in the way he has.

But make no mistake about it: ‘Secrets Make You Sick’ is probably very graphic for some, or hard to swallow for others, but it is, at bottom, a shining beacon of inspiration for those of us still grappling our way around the darkness. Trevor shows that it’s possible to emerge out of the bleakest days of anyone’s life—we only have to soldier on, maybe with our fingers crossed. Review: There are memoirs or autobiographies that are entertaining, or interesting, or funny reads, that are enjoyable on a base level. This is not one of those memoirs. Instead, it is a heart wrenching, and at sometimes depressing and upsetting real life story, that ends up being very inspirational, and gives you a different outlook on life.

Trevor Kleinhans has not had an easy go of things in life. Growing up gay in 1980's South Africa, he has had to live through sexual abuse as a child, apartheid in his home country, being forced into military service, finding out he was HIV positive, and battled a crack cocaine addiction. Like I said, he has not had an easy go of things. But through all of the struggle and hardships in his life, he has come out the other end stronger, and ultimately successful, career-wise.

It says this book took 5 years to write, and I believe it. I mean technically, since it is the story of his life, it has taken him his ENTIRE LIFE to write the story, but actually putting it down into words was probably no easy task. It feels like it comes from a very genuine place (I guess it would be weird if it felt false...), and I feel very fortunate to be able to read his story, and share his experiences with him. Even though I have no first-hand experience whatsoever.

This book is one that will change your perspective on the mundane and trivial problems in your life that everyone lets bothers them, and hopefully change your outlook for the better.

Review: Touching and Inspirational!
Heartwarming tale of one mans strife and accomplishment against all odds. Mr Kleinhans captures your soul and keeps your heart in the palm of his hand for the whole book. The fact that this is a biography just adds to the appeal of the book. It took guts to open himself up to the world by writing his personal accounts and I commend him for that. I highly recommend you take the time to read this book and take inspiration from the author and share it with someone that may also be in denial and need a little push to do the right thing or at least rethink their choices in life.
