I didn’t go home immediately after lectures for that day. I went to a place called garden of eden around the school and sat on a seat beside a tree. I really couldn’t state my reason for going there. The garden is always filled with people who want to relax their mind after lectures. I sat quietly, staring at ladies, trooping in and out of the garden. I kept admiring the beauty of God creation.

My phone suddenly started ringing. I looked at the screen and realized the call was from Sharon. Then it occurred to me that I was supposed to tutor her. it was already 6:15pm and I was still in the school. I picked the call and placed the phone on my ear.

“hello Sharon” I said

“David where are you? I’m at your place already” she said

“okay, just wait for me. I will be with you in the next ten minutes.” I said

“alright be fast. I have been standing here for close to ten minutes already” she said.

“I’m on my way already” I said.

I ended the call and stood up immediately. my phone rang immediately I stood up. I looked at the screen and realized the call was from Princes Precious . I picked it up immediately.

“hello Princes Precious ” I said

“hello David , how are you?” she asked

“I’m good, and you?” I asked

“I’m good too” she responded.

“you said you wanted to have a word with me earlier today, but when I came out of the class after I have ended my conversation with Sharon, I didn’t see you.” I said

“yes, something came up and I had to leave school early. don’t worry, we will talk when we see in school tomorrow” she responded.

“okay, I will talk to you later. let me quickly rush home” I said

“are you not at home already?” she asked

“no, I’m still in school. I need to get home quickly because Sharon is already waiting for me” I responded

“Sharon is at your place already?” she asked sharply.

“yes she is at……….”

“talk to you later” she cut in and ended the call immediately without allowing me to complete my sentence.

I dropped the phone in my pocket and left the school immediately.

I got home to see Sharon standing beside my door. the first thing she did when she saw me was to give me a tight hug. I froze at the warm feeling I was getting. her action caught me by surprise. I never expected to get a hug from her. she has never hugged me before and I see no reason why I deserved a hug from her now. she held on to me tight and I didn’t know if I was supposed to hold her back.

After a while, she freed me and stared into my eyes.

“where have you been?” she asked

“I went to get something from the vendor down my street” I lied

“okay, let’s go in” she said.

I unlocked my door and we entered. I locked it from inside by fastening a bolt to the hook on my door. we went to my bed and sat down. I waited for her to bring out her notebook so that we can start the tutorial, but she didn’t. she just sat quietly on my bed, staring into space.

My door suddenly opened and we turned our gaze to the door to see Princes Precious already inside my room. she paused at the entrance when she saw us. we fixed our gaze on her and she stared back at us with remorse.

“actually I…… I……….. I……. I thought……” she stammered

“I actually thought…..” she paused

“I’m sorry. I should have knocked”

while she was trying to explain herself, I kept wondering how she got in. I thought I locked the door. it suddenly occurred to me that same thing happened the last time she visited. I locked my door from inside and she opened it from outside. I wanted to ask her how she got in when the door was locked, but chose not to ask because she might give a different meaning to the question. I also thought she already told me that we will see in school tomorrow when we spoke on phone. why is she here all of a sudden. all these and other questions were on my mind but I chose not to ask.

she closed the door and walked slowly to us.

“hi Sharon” Princes Precious greeted Sharon.

Sharon only waved her hand without saying anything.

Princes Precious walked to my bed and sat down beside me.

“David you know we were supposed to have a discussion today in school but couldn’t because I left school early. I will just wait for you to finish up with Sharon so that we can have our discussion” she said and immediately lay on my bed.

Sharon stared at her for a while before she turned to face me.

“David let’s start our tutorial please” she said

I could see the look of disappointment on her face when she said that.

“okay, let’s start then” I said

she gave me her book, and I began immediately.

After ten minutes of teaching, I noticed that she was not paying attention. she just kept staring into air. her mind seemed to be somewhere else.

“Sharon” I called to bring her back to reality

she turned to face me

“”you have not been listening” I said

she didn’t respond. she just packed her books back into her bag and stood up.

“let’s continue another day” she said and walked to the door.

she walked out of my room and closed the door behind her. Princes Precious suddenly sat up with smiles on her face immediately Sharon left. she stood up from my bed and walked to the door.

“where are you going?” I asked

“home of course” she responded.

“I thought you said you have something to tell me” I said

“I will tell you when we see in school tomorrow. let me leave you for now so that you can prepare the speech you will deliver next week” she said.

shiver went down my spine at the mention of the word speech. I have totally forgotten about the speech. I have not even made any preparation towards it. I made up my mind that moment to start all necessary preparation.

“okay” I responded.

she walked to the door and went out. I stood up immediately I went to my door. I wanted to know how she managed to enter my room when I locked the door from inside. I locked the door same way I did before she came in. I held the door knob and turned it but it didn’t open. I turned it again and forcefully pulled the door and it opened. I looked at the hook on the door and realized it had broken a bit and could not hold the bolt properly. so that was why Princes Precious could get in even when I locked the door. I thought. I made a metal note to get a new hook.

I walked back to my bed and sat down immediately Sharon and Princes Precious left my room. I took the book Princes Precious gave me and opened to the page that highlighted step by step guideline on how to speak confidently in a large crowd.

After reading for a while, I took a pen and write down some tips. I used the next 4 hours to prepare the speech I would deliver in the event my department is organising. I finally slept off by 1:15am.

I woke up exactly 5:30am. I quickly prepared for lecture. my first lecture for the day was by 8:am. so I have to leave home early in order to get to school on time. I had breakfast and left home exactly 7:am.

I got to the class our first lecture was holding and settle down. the class was almost filled up when I get there. the lecturer walked into the class few minutes later and went straight to the business of the day.

immediately after lecture, Princes Precious walked to me and sat beside me

“hi David” she said immediately.

“hi Princes Precious . how are you?” I asked

“I’m fine and you?” she asked

“I’m fine too” I responded

“I hope you had a great night” she said

“yes” I responded

“and I hope you had enough time to prepare your speech” she said.

I didn’t respond this time. I only stared at her. I still don’t know why I always get scared at the mention of that word ‘speech’

“are you not prepared for it yet?” she asked

“I don’t just know if I’m prepared or not. I’m still very scared” I responded.

“don’t worry, you will overcome your fear. just keep working on it” she said

“thank you very much Princes Precious .” I said

“do you have any other thing to do now?” she asked.

“no, why do you ask?” I asked

“I want us to have our discussion now” she said.

“okay, I’m ready” I responded.

“not here. let’s look for an empty class where we can be alone.” she said

“okay” I responded.

we stood up and left the class. we located an empty class and sat on the seat at the back. we sat quietly for a while. I decided to speak when she wouldn’t speak.

“ Princes Precious , we are here now. let’s start the discussion” I said

she turned to face me and stared into my eyes. I stared back at her.

“David” she called softly.

“yes Princes Precious ” I responded

“have you ever fallen in love?” she asked

I froze immediately. I never expected such question from her.

“I…….. I……… I…… ” I couldn’t say anything. I didn’t even know what to reply her.

“David you know we don’t hide things from each other. so you can talk to me” she said.

I took a deep breath.

“the truth is, I have come in contact with a lot of nice ladies that I love and would love to spend the rest of my life with, but due to my shy nature, I couldn’t approach them and I lost them all” I responded.

“aside from the tutorial, do you and Sharon have any other thing together. are you dating her, or intend to date her?” she asked and stared curiously at me, waiting for an answer

I couldn’t respond. I seemed not to understand why she was asking all these questions. Sharon too, asked me same question some days back.

“David please answer the question” she said when I didn’t respond.

“I’m not dating her” I finally responded.

“that means your relationship with her is strictly based on student and tutor relationship” she said

“yes” I responded

she heaved a sigh of relief.

“if you find out that someone love you dearly and is ready to do anything for you, what will you do?” she asked.

I really didn’t know why she was asking all these questions , but I just have to answer her question from my heart.

“if I realized someone love me for real, I will make sure I never let her go” I responded.

Her face curved in a smile immediately I said that.

“okay. David , there’s something I want to tell you” she said and stared at me with seriousness.

“what’s it?” I asked

“David I really don’t know if I should say this. it’s not proper for a lady to say this to a guy in this part of the world. I just have to say it in order not to regret later.” she paused and stared deeply into my eyes.

“David I……….” she paused immediately she heard the vibration of my phone.

“you have a call” she said.

I brought out my phone and stared at the screen. I picked the call when I realized it was from Sharon.

“hello Sharon.” I said

“David where are you? can you please come to the faculty garden. I have something important to tell you” she said immediately.

“what is it?” I asked

“just come to the faculty garden and please be fast” she said.

“okay, I’m coming” I responded and ended the call.

I turned to face Princes Precious and saw her already staring curiously at me.

“what happened?” she asked

“Sharon said I should meet her at the faculty garden right now” I responded

“I hope there’s no problem?” she asked.

“I don’t think there is a problem. maybe she has a message for me from a lecturer. and I think it very urgent.” I responded.

“okay you can go and meet her” she said.

“okay thanks” I responded.

I stood up immediately and rushed to the faculty garden.

I saw Sharon standing beside a tree when I got to the garden. Sharon seemed to be the only one in the garden. I didn’t see any other person when I got there. she smiled when she saw me and beckoned me to come. I walked to her and stood beside her.

“Sharon I hope there’s no problem” I said immediately.

“not at all dear” she responded.

“you said you have something important to tell me. what is it?” I asked

“yes I have something to tell you.” she said and stared into my eyes.

“do you have a girlfriend?” she asked.

not this question again. I thought

“no” I answered immediately

“I actually want to……….” she paused immediately. something seemed to have distracted her from speaking further. she fixed her gaze at a particular direction. I was sure she was looking at what distracted her from speaking further. I tried to look at what distracted her but she immediately hugged me. I froze immediately. I never expected such from her. saying I was shocked, was an understatement. she freed me and smile. I slowly turned to the direction she was staring at to see Princes Precious staring at us in shock. then it occurred to me that she actually did that because she saw Princes Precious coming.

I stared at Princes Precious and she stared back at me with teary eyes. she turned immediately and ran out of the garden.

I knew at that moment that I have lot of explanation to do. that’s if she even listen........

IS IT NOW A CRIME TO OVERCOME SHYNESS AGAIN? ????
