Title: Great Art. Bad Editing

Review: Wow. I mean right out of the gate, major spelling and punctuation errors, within the first ten pages. I mean the art is great, its Frazetta, but whoever they chose to proof-read this book did a horrible job. Hopefully the 2nd printing will fix these issues, but how do you not even catch errors within the first 3 to 5 pages? Did nobody look at this twice? Seems very amateurish, considering the credentials behind the book.

Disappointing.

The art is phenomenal, when it isn't spread across two pages, which renders the art pretty worthless to examine. But the book is oversized and made of high quality glossy paper. But it just falls apart when you try to read it, and you'll find yourself slightly disappointed when a beautiful peace of work is stuck in the binding of the book due to the large, two-page spread. Weird choices. Sloppy editing.

I guess...I expected better then this. Still worth a look, but be prepared for some head scratching "Why did they do that?" moments.

Review: Bigger, unfortunately, is not better. Besides the sloppy editing and typos noted by previous reviewers, the main problem is that this book does nothing to advance our understanding of and appreciation for Frazetta. Except for Betty Ballantine’s paragraphs—used without copyright attribution from the earlier Peacock Press Frazetta books—the text sheds no new light on Frazetta and is, honestly, unfocused and dull. Some of the art is badly cropped or runs awkwardly across page gutters; other paintings were obviously scanned from printed sources and enlarged, making them very “fuzzy.” Other than one or two roughs or sketches there is nothing in this book that hasn’t already appeared in other collections. Unlike other Frazetta books, there’s no cohesive story or chronology to this one so, because it IS Frazetta—and for no other reason—this gets 2 stars. Barely.

Review: I just recently received this. This is a preliminary review. I've only just begun reading this, but what pop out to me almost instantly was the complete lack of editing and proofreading for such a nice-looking product. The typos and misspellings are frequent and obvious in only the first few pages. It's sullies what otherwise appears to be a good product.

Review: From the exceedingly banal editorial content (who cares how much money did Return of the Jedi make, honestly?) to the dumb layouts others have mentioned, I feel like this is a missed opportunity. Glad I bought it because it’s Frazetta, but this could have been much, much better. Oh, and the typos ... come on.

Title: The Best Frazetta Book by far!

Review: Tremendous, awesome book. What is immediately different about it is the selection of some rarely seen art, sketches and nice full spreads of some works. Beautifully designed. A must have. Oversized too so the images have a “bigger” feel. Contains rarely seen old Ace covers of the 1960s, many editions lost to time. Frazetta truly was THE Fantasy Artist of the 20th Century...

Review: What a BEAUTIFUL book!!! This is my favorite Frazetta book in my collection. Packed full of high quality photos - The book is HUGE!! I put a paperback book next to it in my photos to give you an idea how big it is. I love all the back stories and seeing how Frazetta developed his illustrations. Worth every cent! I LOVE IT!!

Title: Nice Book But Far From Definitive

Review: This is a review of the hard cover first edition of "The Fantastic Paintings Of Frazetta."

The book is 10 1/2 wide by 14 1/2 tall, a good size to present Frazetta's illustrations and paintings. It is a bit slim at under 120 pages on heavy stock paper. This book presents many of Frazetta's most well known, iconic paintings along with select pen and ink line drawings and comics pages prefaced by several articles from the writer and others about the artist.

Most of the paintings take up a full page on the right page with prelim sketches and original book or magazine printing examples on the left page. Several of Frazetta's most iconic paintings (Death Dealer, Cat Woman, The Barbarian, etc) get 4 pages that include various versions of his paintings (he often "revised" his paintings after they were originally published) and full page blown up details of the images. For the more knowledgeable, hardcore fan, there's plenty of key paintings missing from this book such as The Galleon, Princess Of Mars, Golden Girl, etc.

This book originally was supposed to be a large sized, updating of the mid-late 70's series of Frazetta "Fantastic Artwork Of..." softcover art books but this book bears little resemblance to those books for better or worse. Some of the paintings don't look quite as vibrant and sharp in this book as they did in the original softcover book(s) - "The Barbarian" is one example. Whether that's due to the paintings themselves aging over the 40+ years resulting in some color fading or just differences in printing and color grading the images between these two books is up for debate unless one has access to the original paintings.

What hurts this book is the often mentioned glaring typos in the articles at the beginning of the book and the decision to spread several of the paintings across two full pages resulting in the middle of a painting being buried in the center binding. Fold out pages would have been a far better artistic choice.

There's supposed to be a second printing of this book due out before the end of 2020 that hopefully at least address the text typos - I would hold out for that if such things matter. Overall, I would recommend this book for the most casual Frazetta or fantasy art fan looking for a reasonably priced, nice coffee table size book to flip through. Consider it a gateway "Greatest Hits" book that hopefully leads readers towards far more substantial, better (although pricier) books on this artist.
