Title: .0 out of 5 stars An Intriguing and Convicting Look at a Biblical Villain
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2022
Review: Mesu Andrews finally returns with another Biblical fiction epic, and I have to say, she went somewhere completely unexpected. Of all the characters in the Bible to write a story on, let alone a 453-page novel, I doubt I'd have picked Potiphar's wife. I mean, she doesn't even have a name in the Biblical text. However, Mesu Andrews did her justice, and got me thinking, as any good author and good story will.

Here, Potiphar's wife is Princess Zuleika of Crete, and she captured and held my attention. As I knew from the Bible story, Zully's deeds are unacceptable. However, her reasoning behind them always won my sympathy, if not complete empathy. In creating Zully, Mesu created the three-dimensional villain I think most authors strive for, but few actually create because they're writing from a protagonist's lens. With Zully, we get a protagonist/antagonist whose moral compass points everywhere but due north, yet who is still worth rooting for as she searches for redemption. I also found her worth rooting for because she's completely, sometimes uncomfortably, human.

The other characters, both fictional and real, captured my attention as well. Mesu simultaneously had little, and a lot, to work with. She says up front that Potiphar's Wife is "informed fiction," but I think she stayed true to Scripture in her portraits of Potiphar and Joseph. I loved how she even gave them some depths we don't often think about. This is especially true of Joseph, who is so often painted as a perfect man, but was still a flawed human. For example, when he admitted he had passion for Ahira, but not always love, I got behind that. I got behind Joseph as an idealistic, passionate person whose passion could sometimes burn too hot, even though he still loved and served Elohim.

Speaking of Elohim, I loved and drank in His presence during Potiphar's Wife, often because most of the characters did not know or respect Him. I came to love Ahira's spiritual growth, courage, and compassion toward Zully, especially when she told her mistress not only the good news about God (an Old Testament version of the Gospel) but the hard truths, too. Namely, Elohim sees us--but that also means He sees our sins, and cannot accept anything less than total repentance. Have mercy on us all. After finishing the novel, I actually knelt in prayer to confess the ways I had identified with, or been tempted to act, as Zully did over my own desires. I prayed for God to make me an Ahira, a sheep instead of a lion swiping at Him with her claws out of confusion and hurt.

Finally, Mesu certainly did her homework on the culture and history of Crete and Egypt. I knew of her passion for Egypt in particular from some pre-release social media, and she brought it to life for her readers. Every location from Pushpa's kitchen to the villa prison to the pink sands of Crete vibrated with detail. I also loved the contrast in cultures, and felt for and with Zully as she failed to adjust to Egypt. Part of me wanted to be angry with her, as in, "Honey, you're not even trying." But then I realized, would I have done any better than she did? Again, these characters, their homes, and their journeys are so incredibly relatable.

I did remove a star because at times, I felt the talk of conspiracies against Kyran and the intricacies of who was who at court got a bit long-winded. I actually felt the novel would have been much stronger had Mesu focused mainly on the relationship between Zully and Ahira, with maybe a bit of Joseph's story alluded to. As it is, Potiphar's wife is supposed to be a main character, but she feels like a secondary voice in her own story. She's victimized, gaslit, and tormented so often that sometimes, Mesu skirts the line of almost making her behavior excusable. Other times, Zully seems to get punished for things that seem totally unfair, like selling her art in the market. Yes, I know Potiphar forbade it, but until almost the end, I wasn't 100% clear on why, again because of the court intrigue and confusion on who was who and doing what.

As for Joseph's story, it is definitely important. However, the actual confrontation between Joseph and Zully, which Bible readers know so well, doesn't even happen until 90% through. It works out okay since we know how Joseph's story ends, and since Zully gets a good, if not completely happy ending (which would be unrealistic). But again, I'm unsure whether Joseph and Potiphar's points of view were completely necessary. I would argue they were not. That being said, Potiphar's Wife is still a strong book, and worth the time and effort. I wouldn't call it perfect, but Mesu is certainly secure in her place in the court of Biblical fiction.

Review: This reader found this novel about someone the Bible tells us only a little about to be extremely descriptive of what their life may have been like. Of course, that little bit is crucial to understanding many things, but this author has added details to that person's life in a very skillful way. Details of her life before marriage as well as after Joseph's imprisonment. The continuity of this story is smooth and believable. I gained knowledge of Egyptian customs of the time, as well as the practices of other cultures of the day. I will never forget this book. It's that good!

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Forgiving A Bad Girl of the Bible
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2022
Review: Mesu Andrews will sweep you away to Egypt at a time when pharaohs ruled and those in power anticipated a misplaced arrow. Andrews research is impeccable and her writing captures the beauty of ancient civilizations.

Enter a bad girl of the Bible, and you have conflict and tension in epic proportions. I found it difficult to sympathize with Potiphar's wife, Princess Zuleika. Zully arrives in Egypt anticipating to be wife number three to pharaoh, but instead winds up with Captain Potiphar. Never able to leave the love of her island nation behind, Zuleika's selfish ambitions leave despair and brokenness in her wake.

Shining brightly at the end of Zuleika's deception and trickery with Joseph, and her almost ruin of Potiphar, is her conversion to The One True God. God forgives all of Zully's sins, but the consequences of her sin rain on Joseph and his love interest, Ahira. Andrews reminds me to avoid casting the first stone at the sins of others.

Readers will be enthralled with Andrews' gift of bringing history to life. Stick with the history in the first two chapters as they are challenging but continue reading to see how God redeems a woman who needs to grow up and own her dysfunction.

I received a complimentary copy of this story from the publisher but all opinions are my own.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Joseph and Potipharโ€™s Wife!

Review: The incredible Bible stories of the life of Joseph in Genesis has always been intriguing. Mesu Andrews took the Egyptian part of Josephโ€™s life much beyond what we learn through Godโ€™s Word. One needs to read Josephโ€™s story completely in the Bible to know be able to distinguish Godโ€™s truth from the fictional added details of the author. But once again, Andrews did her homework in researching the culture of Egypt during this period of long ago time. Within her writing she wove Godโ€™s Truth with knowledge of Egypt and her creative mind. This was a book that I struggled to put down! Excellent!

Title: .0 out of 5 stars DROP EVERYTHING and read this book!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2022
Review: Once again Mesu Andrews makes me question whether or not she is just a gifted writer or a prophetic voice for today. While reading this newest novel of hers, I was reminded of the prophet Elisha who heard the king's plans that he spoke in his bedroom. I have even wondered if the "ideas" that she crafts together to tell a story are really just God revealing to her what actually happened so many centuries ago.

Her writing is so timely and not only shines a "human quality" on stories of the ancient people of the Bible but also points to its relevance to the world we live in today. Although you don't particularly like it, you can understand WHY Zully does what she does. The thread weaved of God's redemption and forgiving nature is seen through every page.

I may not have committed the acts that Zully did, but I still saw myself in her. I also saw God's love show up for her and myself. Zully's story is every person's redemption story. We all fall short, but as Mesu masterfully shows us, God does not.

This is a wonderful read that captured me from the first moment the sea spray struck my face. 100% recommend!
