Title: An opportunity for critique

Review: I assigned this book to my class of first-year seminar students. They are mostly science-oriented first-year undergraduates, and I am a physics professor, but this is a seminar rather than a hard science course. I selected this book because it was one of the only available sources on this topic at the right level (not too basic but not too technical either). I wanted students to read about intuitive theories in science, and think about what goes on when they learn new scientific concepts or butt up against inconsistencies in their intuitive theories. The book did a great job at this, and gave some really clear explanations and examples of this in different scientific fields. I liked that it touched upon both physical science and biological science.

The downsides of this book are the following:
-It is quite repetitive at times. For this reason, I did not assign the entire book, but rather selected chapters. I don't think this book is meant to be read cover-to-cover.
-My students felt the author's tone was a bit judgemental/condescending. The author points out that everyone can fall prey to intuitive theories - even PhD scientists - which is a really important point. But students felt that the author’s tone was condescending nonetheless. One example is the Halloween spider decoration on page 226 that the author described as "a testament to our poor understanding of the relationships between living creatures. Only vertebrates have bones. Invertebrates, which include spiders, split off from vertebrates over five hundred million years ago." My students felt that this example was a poor choice to back up his claim. It's just a Halloween decoration! (Or was it just a bad joke??)
-Finally, there were several places in the book where I felt the author was sloppy with the science and/or a scientific footnote was in order.

A few examples of science bones to pick:
-page 12: The drawing of the cannonball with a non-parabolic path is incorrect for a typical cannonball, but it actually has a lot of similarities to the paths of projectiles under the influence of significant air resistance. I feel like this should have been mentioned in a footnote at a minimum.
-Chapter 3: The author spends a lot of time talking about how heat is not a "thing" and how important it is for people to understand it as an emergent process rather than a thing. But entire subfields of physics are absorbed with understanding phonons - quasiparticles of heat. While a quasiparticle is not the same as a particle, it turns out that, conceptually, there are plenty of times when it's okay - even good! - to think of heat as a "thing".
-page 76: How does the ball follow a parabolic path when it's still on the table? The parabolic path shouldn't begin until the ball loses contact with the table. Since the entire point of the drawing is to show a "correct" and an "incorrect" path, I feel that the “correct” path should be more correct than this.

On the plus side, the book’s balance of faults and virtues provided an opportunity for my students to practice critique. I’m not sure yet whether I will assign this book again next year.

Review: While a couple of the negative reviews have a point or two, such as the fact that he doesn't chart how changes in thinking occur over time (a massive and very lengthy undertaking, I might add), I think that every science teacher in this country should have a copy, and if I were a billionaire I would buy them!

My expertise is in cognitive errors made by adults, and hoped to find some origins of these in this book. No, not here. But what is here is just astounding in many cases. My favorite fact: 80% of adults think that GMO foods should have a warning label (despite every fact to the contrary), and 80% (the same ones?) think that foods containing DNA should also have a label. Are these people eating rocks, or what?

He details studies of children, mainly, how instead of saying "I don't know" when asked about motion, matter, evolution, gravity, the shape of the world, and so on, they have theories which he labels 'intuitive'. All of them are wrong in some ways, but when taught that they are not right and they are provided the real scientific explanations, the intuitive ideas are very resistant to change, especially if the ideas have a religious basis in some people's mind, such as evolution.

So we don't come into the world as a blank slate, but quickly develop ideas about our world that are wrong. I find this very disturbing and think that science needs to be taught from very early in life, maybe even in kindergarten! I look for more from this young man. Perhaps he will extend his research to what kids think about people and why they do what they do - i.e. researching the origins of cognitive errors like "He tripped and fell and so he is clumsy, but when I trip and fall it's just an accident.", known as the fundamental attribution error, taught in Psych 101 in college.

Very clearly written! Accessible to everyone with a high school degree, I should think.

Review: In an age where believing in science is viewed as partisan and fake news is a constant problem, Scienceblind couldn't come at a more important time. This careful and comprehensive review of the kinds of intuitive theories that lead us astray when drawing conclusions about the physical and biological world is eye-opening for even the science buffs among us. As a scientist myself, there were times in the book where I felt I had to fight my own intuitive theories about the world to to fully embrace some of the arguments, each of which were laid out simply and clearly. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the physical and biological world, who wants to understand why so many people reject basic scientific concepts and endorse conspiracy theories, or anyone who just wants to come closer to understanding the way humans think about the world.

Review: Every semester for the last 20 years, I have begun my Developmental Psychology class by giving my undergraduate students a “quiz.” The truth/false questions on the quiz are designed to get the students to recognize the intuitive beliefs that they come into the classroom with, many of which are FALSE. As we confront these beliefs, over the course of the semester, I have been struck by the rigidity of many of my students. Why are individuals so unwilling to change some of their deeply held intuitive beliefs? I found the answer to this question in Scienceblind by Andrew Shtulman -- a well-written and informative book that is rich with examples. I feel strongly that this book should be required reading for educators at all levels!
