It takes conviction to title a user experience book that stands solidly on a cognitive science foundation as “Magic” but through the practice of the Semantic Interaction Design method this breakthrough book introduces, you will appear to many as possessing superhero UX powers. The Semantic IxD method is laser focused on transforming product requirements into experiences guaranteed to result in the minimum cognitive load with the smallest number of screens and fewest flow steps possible. An additional benefit it provides is a 10X speed increase at which designers can achieve these magical results. It provides an antidote to the expensive a

Review: A simple, proven guide book you’ll want to refer back to over and over. I recommend getting the hard copy and using lots of sticky notes to bookmark and annotate.

Review: WHY is the text alignment justified?! So much research on reading shows that variable spaces between words slows down reading and adds cognitive load. Some lines were so compressed they looked like one, long, unreadable line. It was so distracting in having a hard time getting through it. At first I thought it was a UX joke. I’m disappointed that this decision was made specifically on a book about UX.

Review: Creating successful software products is exceedingly difficult in an industry beset by ever-changing job titles, development methodologies, tooling, and even fundamental values. (Worked with any software architects lately?) Most software efforts end in failure. This book is unlike any I've read about interaction design because it takes what skilled teams do implicitly and makes it explicit so that designers can learn to prevent product disasters—even when the root cause lies outside of design.Probably its most important lesson is that design processes frequently lack a synthesis phase, in which you take all the information you’ve gathered from stakeholders, user research, customers, and product managers and “design what you’re going to design.” The team creates a conceptual model that enumerates which objects and attributes the product will present to users for viewing and manipulation. Skipping this phase and going straight from research to design is the biggest mistake there is, yet I haven’t encountered one yet in nine years in Silicon Valley. In fact, it's exactly what happened when I followed established processes in the IT department at one of the world's most valuable consumer electronics companies. Reading this book beforehand wouldn't have fixed everything but it probably would have shortened the schedule by six to eight months. There are many chapters and I can't say they're fun. But read this book, refer to it often, construct artifacts for use in your work, and evangelize the process. With luck it will change everything about the way you and your partner teams define, design, and build products together.

Review: I have read the book (the author provided an advanced copy) and also had the privilege of working for the author on 3 occasions at 3 different companies. Dan Rosenberg is a master UX practitioner, who was responsible for guiding my transition from entry-level-newbie to journeyman-UX-designer.UX Magic encapsulates the lessons Dan has learned and successfully applied over a multi-decade career running some of the largest UX design organizations on the planet. Dan's design work, design thinking, UX and business strategies have literally impacted the career paths of 100's (if not 1000's) of UX professionals who've worked on his teams. No longer a corporate denizen, Dan is now a professor at San Jose State University's well-regarded UX program where he continues to influence and grow the upcoming generations of UX talent.Dan covers a lot of important ground in UX Magic. Do yourself, your career, and your users a favor. Buy, read, and apply the learnings from this book.

Review: I absolutely love Daniel's explanation of the UX Grammar and his object x action matrix! I will definitely be integrating this activity in my process. The first two chapters alone makes the pricetag of this book worthwhile.I also really enjoyed the Game chapter and the last chapter on Design Systems. He argues that they should be based on a conceptual model—YES. YES. YES.Highly recommend this book to any UX designer.

Review: Most software products are designed by software engineers and, if available, product managers who by the nature of their professions start with what’s possible and what the market demands. UX designers rush to mockup screens based, not on the user's way of thinking, but on customer complaints, a visionary’s hunch, or a backend software architecture. Even if everyone does their part with competence, software products often miss the mark and, because they lack a core component of a clear conceptual model, fixes are tedious and mysterious.Dan Rosenberg’s UX Magic offers a detailed approach that can change all that.Study Dan’s methods. Learn them. Practice them. Evangelize the models you discover from this practice, relentlessly, until everyone on your team is speaking the same language. Product managers will cut through the chaos of customer complaints and market analyses to deliver stories everyone—executives, developers, and support staff—can relate to and remember. Software architects will build backbones into their designs that reflect and adapt to how people use their products. UX designers who use these tools will find themselves leading product meetings, raising their rates, and becoming known as magicians.I should know. It worked that way for me.

Review: Great insights into a more principled UX process based on the author's experience clarifying and simplifying interfaces for SAP and others. Lots of great examples showing both excellent and poor interfaces. He presents new systematic processes for designing and improving interaction processes. He presents insightful examples of flaws in the interfaces of popular products. Well worth studying!

Review: In this book, Dan provides access to science and art behind great user experience.Often quoted, "no UI is the best UI," Dan takes us through many real-life examples where the right UI helped to drive value to the user and the business behind the experience. This book is not a fluffy coffee-table design book you keep where your team or clients can see it. It is a 'working-book,' you should read, analyze, and use to understand the possible solutions for the design challenges you are facing.I strongly recommend this book for every person who likes to be considered a designer.
