The story "The Boat" by Alistair MacLeod is about a middle-aged professor who recalls his childhood memories of fishing with his father. The narrator's father was a fisherman who loved the sea, but he also felt trapped by his life. He never went to college, and he felt like he had missed out on other opportunities. The narrator's father eventually died young, and the narrator has always felt guilty that he never got to know him better.
