Review: I'm so glad I found this and it's Biology companion book! We've always used DK books for non-fiction for the kids and now that they're teens it's hard to find anything with the beautiful illustrations like other DK books. This fits the bill for Middle School and High School beautifully! I highly recommend this as a study companion.

Review: I flunked 9th grade chemistry and I've always kind of thought that I should make that up..!!!
So I bought this book as an introduction to chemistry, and I found that it was more of a reference book for anyone that's already been doing a considerable amount of research and study into chemistry. There was also an egregious error in their periodic table, and the thing I found most annoying was that it failed to explain the behavior of electrons, which is the core of chemical reactions, and why the transitional metals are transitional and what's so special about their electron orbits...?
It also has numerous experiments which presumably you would actually have to conduct to get the full value of them...!!!
It was kind of a pretty book, but it didn't work 100% with my iPad ? I've noticed this with a lot of digital books and a lot of other digital books that do work fine, so I'm not really sure what accounts for the ones that don't work properly ???
Another thing was that it introduces the reader to a whole bunch of new words, but it doesn't tell you how to pronounce them !!!
The one thing that I really wanted to learn; after watching Breaking Bad !!! Was how you would create new molecules from recipes or perhaps without a recipe, I've been thinking that chemistry is kind of like programming a computer, in which you would have to go through a number of steps, to get the desired result, and this book did not even hint as to how you would go about this !?!
Disappointing.

Review: My 12 year old loves the book. (We also bought the Physics and Biology versions which he hasn't started yet.) Unfortunately we've had the book less than a week and the binding has failed. I'm going to take it to Staples and see if they can turn it into a spiral bound book so the pages don't start falling out. Too bad about the structural quality, b/c he really does enjoy the content and has learned a lot.

Review: I purchased this book for a very advanced middle school chemistry student who has completed BiochemistryLiteracyForKids.com and is now in organic chemistry. He was thrilled to receive it, but within minutes, the spine separated from the cover and the pages crack when you turn them. The book is compact and attractive, but certain design choices were made at the expense of easy reading. There are too many instances of black words on dark blue backgrounds, places where the font is so small I (mid-40s) need a magnifying glass. The information seems great, except that it doesn't give the most current understanding of atomic orbitals. I do like that younger students get a solid introduction to the equipment used in wet chemistry labs.
