Review: Hey! If you're on the fence about buying this book, go ahead and do it. It's not just a good overview of how the sound and the scene developed in that era in Los Angeles; Viator also examines the myriad economic, political, and social forces shaping the choices people made, which in turn shaped the genre's early development.She shows the power of the music wasn't solely due to creative choices made by musicians, deejays, and distributors and vendors: the actions and reactions of everyone, from enthusiastic audiences, histrionic community leaders, skeptical music critics, and especially the notorious and narrow-minded LAPD, to even the nascent music video industry of the time, pushed and pulled at the artists crafting lyrical stories as well as molding the stories themselves.I also felt this was a neat capsule of a generational follow-up to Isabel Wilkerson's Warmth of Other Suns, in a "Where are they now?" kind of way for the late '80s/early '90s. Viator recaps what happened to many transplants in that exodus, after their arrival from the South, to open the book. She shows the promised land is never as advertised, and that the harsh conditions baked into LA's founding and development were and are a rigid crucible that molded the inheritors of those migrants' hopes and dreams into the hardcore rappers and their eager audiences.

Review: Calling all music aficionados, LA history buffs, and racial justice advocates. Felicia Viator drops readers in 1980's southeast Los Angeles with all its color, smells, sights, and most powerfully - its sounds. Viator's social history combines line-by-line lyrical analysis with the socio-political moment, one that feels all that more important as our country manages to still struggle to find answers to America's history of anti-blackness and police violence in the wake of the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. The book not only conveys the moment with so much detail, so much clarity that I feel transported to the studio and streets of LA. It's also made listening to the music of the era all more enjoyable as I can experience a window into a world hidden even to those Angelenos who were miles away from experiencing sunshine, palm trees, and Hollywood. This missing piece of California history and national cultural history is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn more about the LAPD's reign of terror and the subsequent cultural outcry from the streets, manifested from new accessible recording technologies.This passage I've found myself coming back to time and time again, searching for answers to our modern predicament;"In Southern California, the plight of those in living in low-income inner-city neighborhoods because especially acute in the early 1980s when Proposition 13, an initiative passed in 1978 that placed a strict two percent limit on annual property tax increases, caused state and local governments to slash spending on roads, parks, schools, libraries and fire, pandemic and police departments. In the wake of the tax revolt, Los Angeles County leaders put forth proposals for levying new local taxes to protect and expand public services but those efforts mostly failed. This meant that those families already confined to the poorest neighborhoods by low wages and limited employment opportunities saw public schools deteriorate further and municipal services like public transportation become increasingly unreliable. The shifts coincided with and resulted in, the further expansion of local street gangs, the rise in violent crime, and the spread of illicit industries, including guns and narcotics trafficking. These were devastating changes that gave the county's police agencies leverage to demand a larger proportion of public funds for crime control at a time when city budgets were in the red. By the early 1980s, residents in the most economically vulnerable regions of South Los Angeles county were struggling to adapt to deteriorating public services and worse job options and an increased police presence."

Review: This book is truly one of a kind. As a lifelong rap fan who spent the majority of my formative years on the East Coast, there has always been gaps in my understanding of '80s LA rap. The story of N.W.A. in particular has been the source of several books and documentaries, but they all lack the level of analysis and detail that Viator provides here. In fact, the book's very first chapter, "The Batterram", gives the backstory of LAPD's most notorious tactical vehicle in a way that I have never read before. PRO TIP: visit/revisit Toddy Tee's 1985 song of the same title after soaking up the details given by the author. This book is DEEP. Too often, authors of rap books come across as trite and corny as if their job is to describe the genre to someone who has never heard it before; "To Live and Defy in LA" is not that. This book is both fresh and engaging while providing an extreme level of detail and analysis. From K-Tel to KDAY, this book covers it all and really describes the environment that set the stage for the most influential sub genre of rap music. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Review: I love music and I've always been interested in the history of West Coast rap so as soon as this book came out it became a must have! Happy to say it delivers on that promise and on so much more. The history not just of rap but of California and Los Angeles in particular is wonderful. A real treat I was not expecting is the deep dive into the marriage of image and sound. The meticulous way visual storytelling brought this reality into people's living rooms, not only with MTV but also with local news networks and ultimately with the national political stage, is fascinating and foundational to how we consume media today. BUT most importantly, it's reading about the music that quickly and effortlessly became the soundtrack to many of our lives -- Egypt, Egypt! Straight Out of Compton! Anything from The Chronic! Incredible!

Review: this was one of the most thorough books about rap music I've ever read, and the research into the content was extremely well done. I like history anyway so it was also fun to read considering I was experiencing the rap explosion back in the 80's ( However I didn't care for the vulgarity) but now I have a new perspective and understanding of how and why it originated. I highly recommend this book for students of history
