Review: I became aware of the existence of Gary DeMar through a debate that Gary had with Dave Hunt. At that time, I was looking for some answers regarding Calvinism and the supposedly errors and heresies in the system. The title of the debate was "Are we living in the Last days?". Before I listened to it, I thought Dave Hunt was going to demolish DeMar's arguments. To my surprise, that didn't happen. Not only that, but DeMar raised some very interesting questions that I had never heard of before. I am sure that even Dave Hunt did not heard those questions and arguments before, for at one point, Hunt says that he was glad that DeMar believed in the Second Coming of Christ and that his position was different from Kenneth Gentry's position. To which DeMar responded that it was not. That Dave should read Gentry's books to find out what Gentry really believes.

But because something else was more important for me at that point (Calvinism vs. Arminianism), I didn't continue searching for answers. I just placed that debate on the back of my mind. But eventually that came up again. And when I was looking for some answers on eschatology, I picked up Gary DeMar's copy: "End Times Fiction" to see what was wrong with Dispensationalism. At that time, I thought it possible to be a 5 point Calvinist and a Dispensational regarding eschatology. I didn't want to let Dispensationalism go.

DeMar's book is very easy to read, but it is well researched with copious notes at the end of the book. One of the first things that grabbed my attention about the book, was the publisher. I knew that NELSON Books publishes a lot of Dispensational material of authors such as John MacArthur and John Hagee. So, I thought maybe DeMar was not really at odds with the Dispensational system after all. But the forward written by R. C. Sproul told me right away that the book was very serious about exposing the faulty arguments of the Dispensational system.

It is true that the main purpose of the "End Times Fiction" is to "deconstruct" and not to build a case. For building a case in favor of what DeMar believes to be the true eschatological system, one must look on another book or books from DeMar. But this book gave me the foundations I needed to totally abandon the Dispensational system. DeMar makes eschatology matters very simple. He refutes Tim LaHaye point after point interacting with what LaHaye has written on his best selling fictional books regarding the end times.

Perhaps DeMar doesn't do a detailed exposition of the topics he chose, but he does a very good introduction to one of the alternative views of the end times. Topics such as "Babylon: Literal or symbolic?" are worth the price of the book. When we realize that even Dispensationalist writers don't agree between them about the real identity of Babylon, we know that something is really wrong. His idea about the real identity of the Apocalyptic Babylon is very interesting and compelling, but most important, it is biblical!.

So, What can I say to those that want to buy the book? Buy it and read it. It will shock you to know that some of the most popular ideas about the END TIMES don't have the slightest support from the Bible. And, Who knows? You may after reading the book, end up being one of the most staunch defenders of the Partial Preterist position regarding eschatology.

Review: I enjoyed reading this book very much. I was pleased to finally read a book that gave the Preterist/Partial Preterist view some possible merit. Although it didn't change or budge my understanding of eschatology, DeMars book was worth reading simply because I love reading a well written book that has topics of my own interests. Whether I happen to agree with the author or not is secondary. I enjoy hearing and reading various opinions on the "Last Days" topics with a hope of finding something that I may have missed. This book kept me interested the whole way through, but it didn't convince me of a Partial Preterist understanding of the end times.

Considering his so-called "obvious" (as he would often state within his book) biblical conclusions, I think he succeeded in some respects and failed in others. He succeeded in showing that the Left Behind series has biblical flaws. I agree at times with DeMar on many points that casts biblical doubt on some of Lahaye's interpretations, but I believe that DeMar's viewpoints are also loaded with problems as well. In short, both prophetic viewpoints of DeMar and LaHaye have problems. I recommend this book for a good read, not because I actually agree with the author and his own conclusions. I think people should be careful not to make this a black and white issue with it being only two interpretations that can be valid. There's always more than two sides to every story or debate.

From my own personal study of prophecy, I believe there are bits of truth and bits of innaccuracy on both sides represented in this book. There has only been one author whom I believe has the most accurate and biblical interpretation of the end times (although he passed away in 1980) and not many people have heard of him. No one has a perfect understanding of Scripture or eschatology, so I'm not claiming that my personal favorite author is always right or is free from false interpretations. But, for you who enjoy reading books on prophetic material, get yourself all (and I really mean ALL) of Arthur E. Bloomfield's books and start studying his interpretations. I'm sure DeMar would easily dismiss Bloomfield's books because of its "futuristic" interpretation of prophecy, but if DeMar would read Bloomfield, I would love to see how well he could refute his non-Preterist arguments.

Review: Not at all what I expected and it left both my husband and I very much unsure of what we believe about the rapture, end times, millennium, and pre-tribulation doctrine. My husband has read it at least four times comparing it with Scripture. It made a lot of sense to both of us. I don't believe the subject is an essential to nail down in Christianity and though I am interested in the subject decided that there will really be no way of knowing whose interpretation is correct until Jesus actually returns. I would like to read DeMar's book, The Early Church and the End of the World, for further insight.

Review: Too often, people just believe what they are told is true and never bother testing it for themselves. People are too trusting, just because some Christian wrote it or claimed it is true. All of "Left Behind" scenarios that took on new life around Y2K (and probably will be dusted off for 2012) aren't as biblical and rational as their supporters make them sound. In fact, over half of the Christian world officially doesn't buy into them. This book not only explains why, but shows the inconsistent reasoning of the pop-culture theories. If you really want to study endtimes, you owe it to yourself to check out this book and do a thorough study. See also the excellent
