Review: This is a fascinating book! I bought it primarily because the title makes one think it will be basically the teachings of Buddhism in graphic novel form, well...... kind of. In fact it is more like something from out of Heavy Metal, the adult illustrated fantasy magazine, and it gets gritty with horror and Twilight Zone type tales, but the philosophy is there, it’s just hidden in the stories rather than spoon fed to the reader. Personally, I love this book! Had a great evening reading it, the only downside is it went to fast.

Review: The Eightfold Path is one of the best graphic novels I've read in recent times. Illustrated incredibly by Bryan Christopher Moss and written by Steven Barnes and Dr. Charles Johnson, they all have created a profound afrofuturistic book that weaves individual life lesson stories together with teachings of Buddhism in a dark, entertaining, and moving way.

Think of a mix of Alexandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain, Tales from the Crypt, Black Mirror, Twilight Zone and 1980's Amazing Stories to understand the vibe of this book - each story is unique yet all connected as a whole, into one epic crafted saga.

Bryan Christopher Moss' artwork is fantastic as each story exhibits a different artistic style on its own but they all connect into one fluid tapestry-like work of art. His artistic style mixes conventional to abstract in a very visually appealing way. Depending on each individual story, he changes the tone of his art to fit each story, from horror to sci-fi to noir and more. Sometimes his art stays in boxed panels while others pop out spreading across the whole page - there are no boundaries for his artwork to take life and it was exciting to see how he illustrated each chapter. Action scenes such as astronauts versus aliens fighting on alien planets or gangs brawling on the city streets were all incredibly illustrated with his unique fluid style! I will be looking forward to see more artwork or graphic novels from Bryan Christopher Moss.

What an excellent book with a high rereadable factor! Definitely pick up!

Review: So - full disclosure I know Steven Barnes and his wife Tananarive Due from their amazing LIFEWRITING community and when I heard of this title, I ordered it instantaneously. I am a practicing Buddhist (SGI) as well as full-time professional artist in the field of sci-fi/fantasy so I was extraordinarily well poised to enjoy it.

But - it was a pre-order, months away. The day it arrived I was flat on my rear due to COVID, and this arrived as a welcome distraction. And... well, WOW -- I read it in one sitting.

What Steve et al have done here is, in my view, nothing short of creating a whole new subgenre of material? "Buddhist Noir" - a combination of deep, profound stories about the human condition mixed with pulp fiction / EC Comics vibe cautionary tales. But, unlike those old pulp fiction tales, the horrors of the things that go wrong are even more horrifying, because they are REAL. Not like Capital "T" Truth, but true in the sense that they speak to things evil in the human condition, which is even more disturbing. Yet at the same time this collection has very deep moments of love and meaning that help give us ideas about how to cope with the seeming purposelessness of the universe.

While I'm no graphic novel nerd, I appreciate that the form is reaching literary status, and in this bold mashup of high-brow / low-brow fiction, I think they've achieved a whole new level. This is one of those of those books that once you read it, you'll find yourself re-reading, and pondering, all that it leaves you with for some time.

Review: A truly sublime reading experience. The Eightfold Path, at its most basic level, is pure, primal storytelling: A varied group of people sitting around a fire spinning yarns. Naturally, in the hands of brilliant creators and thinkers like Charles Johnson and Steven Barnes, those stories offer depth, complexity, grace and horror in equal measure.

Each morality tale contains its own dark beauty and wonder, all of them ultimately weaving together into an extraordinary denouement that ties them all together.

No detail has been overlooked in the production of this book, from the dust jacket to the binding to the reproduction of illustrator Bryan Christopher Moss’ evocative artwork. A different color palette is used for each story (a very thoughtful artistic choice), and the artwork quite literally explodes from the page.

This book will have a permanent place on my shelf, to be read again and again.

At the end of it I sat out and thought
and it helped me refocus on where my dreams are directed.

It's not for everyone.
It has many things which are easier to face if one's had a life facing horrors which may not have had answers or justice.
Or maybe for those who want to understand such a bit better.
or for those who see horror, fantasy, science fiction, possible nightmares as an escape.

If you want all happy stories where everything bad is answered
or 4 colour stories and art (think superhero comics)
This is not the right choice.

Review: The Eightfold path by Steven Barnes and Charles Johnson

I recently completed the book/comic/illustrated novel The Eightfold Path. Man! What a ride! I read it on my kindle and the translation to the ebook format is flawless.

I grew up on the old pulp magazines of the 60’s and 70’s. Tales from the Crypt, Vampirella, that sort of thing, and the tales told here took me back to those days. Each tale illustrates an aspect of Buddhism, grabbing the reader by the lapels and not letting go until the last panel, when the narrator takes over and there’s a short break before plunging into the next story.

The stories are gripping and the artwork is superb. I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel. You will, too.
