Review: Up until I read Richard Nixon The Life, I really didn’t know much about the man. I knew of him as being the Vice President for Eisenhower and the man who lost the 1960 Presidential election to JFK. Later he lost the California Governor’s race in 1962 and rebounded to win the Presidential election in both 1968 and 1972.

What the author John A. Farrell brings to the table is what made Richard Nixon tick. As the author explains in most of the scenarious of Nixon is that he was always paranoic and was not always outgoing and when things were not going his way he would be withdrawn and hence paranoic. We see a highly intelligent person who at times was very unsure of himself. Not being able to attend the elite universities on the East Coast not for lack of intelligence but for the lack of money.

Nixon was persuaded to enter politics in California as a U.S. congressman in 1946 and as they say the rest is history. Farrell details the Senate Race of 1950 Presidential election of 1952 earmarks his political successes as a young man. His dealing is masterfully detailed as to how Nixon proceeded in the Alger Hiss hearings. The author shows to us the first scandal that Nixon had to deal with when he was questioned on his financial dealings in the 1962 Presidential campaign. It shows a young Nixon utilizing the media of TV to give his famous Checker’s speech and redeeming himself on national TV.

Farrell shows an in depth look at Nixon’s relationship with Eisenhower. Not in all circumstances did Ike get along with his Vice President. Onto the 1960 Presidential election when the political fortunes of Dick Nixon began to change. With that Presidential loss came his loss in the 1962 California election. From there the author details Nixon’s political comeback. The triumph of the 1968 election and the landslide of 1972 election gave Nixon his nadir in the political arena.

With that said the tragedy of Watergate is discussed and shows to us an intelligent man who was quite excellent in dealing in foreign affairs but could not handle his paranoiac behavior and thus led him obstruct justice to the point that I actually felt sorry for Nixon.

Review: I am an avid reader of Nixon biographies having read all of Stephen Ambrose's trilogy, Roger Morris (hatchet job), Herb Parmet and more. First new biography on Nixon in many years and it was a winner. Well written with great new history and insights. Couldn't put it down. Despite what your feelings are on Nixon, he is still one of the most remarkable figures in American history. His life is truly an example of life being stranger than fiction. This was a fascinating account of a troubled, polarizing yet innately American persona. Strongest recommendation.

Review: Richard Nixon must be one of the most difficult choices for a historian to tackle. I'll bet there are few who are aware of who he was with a neutral feeling about him and most of those feelings are painted in various shades of abhorrence. Most of us probably think of him as a disgraced, impeached, excommunicated, bitter, grumpy, white guy. John Farrell accomplishes the task of telling his story with poise and skill. Love him or hate him; while reading I kept waiting for Farrell to declare himself one way or the other but was never able to guess. Nixon was a very complex person and any story has to balance the inconsistencies and contradictions. There have been other modern presidents with such complexity: LBJ and FDR come to mind but they both exited the stage with a cachet of respectability. Nixon did not but enough time has elapsed that he deserves a description for our times (especially with the scent of impeachment in the air) which sets aside value judgments and shows how the contradictions imprisoned within his personality played out on the stage of American history for better or for worse. Nixon accomplished much for the better and we all know about the worse. It is not easy for those of us who lived through the period and the turmoil and the pain to trust someone to try to tell a story about it but Farrell is to be commended for the even-handed and empathetic way he accomplished the job. Highly recommended.

Title: Like LBJ, both a great and horrible President

Review: I wanted to read a biography that covered the entirety of Nixon's political career and not just Watergate, and this book does exactly that. What is so unusual about this biography is that it is very balanced. It certainly doesn't sugar coat Nixon's ruthlessness, his many flaws and his complete unscrupulousness as a political operator, but it also details Nixon's intelligence and creativity (along with Kissinger) on his foreign policy successes (Russians SALT, China, India/Pakistan). Nixon, like LBJ, who I believe were very similar, were both great and horrible presidents. They made careers out of destroying their political enemies until they both got into a situation (of their own making) that they couldn't get out of (LBJ - Vietnam and Nixon - Watergate) and those same enemies then destroyed them, like vultures circling over a carcass. I had always thought that JFK was Nixon's political nemesis, but in fact, the two were actually quite close up until the 1960 presidential election and Dick and Pat had attended JFK's and Jackie's wedding. As the book points out, Nixon's real political nemesis was Earl Warren! I also thought it was fascinating how Eisenhower completely used Nixon's skills when Nixon was Vice President, but claimed all of Nixon's ideas and accomplishments as his own. This is a great book - highly recommended.
