Review: While I enjoyed reading this book and diving into the narrative and Kaikeyi’s perspective, the narrative drags far too much within each part.

Additionally, portraying Ravana (a rapist, murderer and literal moral deviant) in a sympathetic light as Sita’a father was extremely unsavory. Also, portraying Lord Ram as a morally dubious and slightly negative character is complete inaccurate considering Kaikeyi and his bond was the strongest in the original epic. He was always humble, subservient to the people, never insulted women and loved Sita from the moment they met. These inaccuracies dampened the fun of reading the novel and ruined certain parts of the book.

That being said, i would advise reading this from a fresh perspective and as a book completely unrelated to the original Ramayan. There are too many inaccuracies and too much fiction to connect the this book to the original epic. Those that worship Lord Ram and Devi Sita will have a hard time digesting several parts of this book and therefore should just either not read it or forgo the connection between this novel and the original epic.

Review: This well written story kept me guessing to the end. I found the author's insistence on foreshadowing frustrating and it dimmed my enjoyment of the story. Often she'd end a particularly happy moment with something like "and this was how I caused my husband's death." which felt like emotional backlash.

Other than that tendency, I enjoyed the story and recommend it.

Review: "Kaikeyi" is the story of a princess in a patriarchal society, and her journey from discovering her own unique skills, to growing them and then wielding them to achieve her life's purpose. The story proceeds at a leisurely pace, giving the reader space to revel in the lush setting, but providing enough drama to hold their interest. Some retellings of Hindu myths provide scientific interpretations of supernatural phenomenon, but "Kaikeyi" leans into the supernatural, red-skinned monsters, talking birds and all. It's a delightful world to immerse oneself in.

If you're familiar with the Ramayana, you will enjoy the familiar references, as well as the occasional surprise when the book contradicts the myth. However you don't need to have read the Ramayana to understand or appreciate this book.

While I enjoyed the book, in the end it felt a little shallow to me. The mythical Kaikeyi is the quintessential villain, and I would have loved to see a more complex, nuanced retelling instead of the total rehabilitation she receives in this book. Also, it is hard to know what the author wants us to make of the devas (gods) and asuras (demons). She takes the gods down a notch from the infallibility of mythology, but doesn't go all the way to establishing a new context to view them in. Are the asuras actually evil, or is that propaganda from the devas? What is Vishnu's motivation for his repeated avatars? Is he actually trying to help humanity like he claims, or is it simply politics between the devas and the asuras?

The book focuses on telling a feminist story here, at the expense of exploring the mythology. Which is probably better for readers unfamiliar with Hindu legends, but for those of us who are, it leaves us wishing for more depth.

Review: Absolutely loved it! Vaishnavi Patel brings us parts of the story that seem unbelievable but still fit, making the Ramayana much more fantastical and realistic.
SPOILER ALERT
Her addition of the Binding Plane brings a mystical touch, still fantasy, but not the mythology of the Ramayana. This retelling, instead of the usual good or bad, makes everybody “trying-to-be-good”, with Kaikeyi only calling in boons because her brother was threatening war, or Ravana only taking Sita because he was her father, and Rama wasn’t being a good husband. And though many don’t like it because it almost seems to portray Rama as a villain, if you reread it, he was only like that because he was influenced by Sage Vamadeva, and he did become a hero in the end. The only thing I didn’t like is that the time it took Kaikeyi to control the Binding Plane was too short. I know that she’s gods-touched, but the Binding Plane is like another dimension, and I feel like it should have taken a bit longer for her to master it.

Apart from that, Kaikeyi was an amazing book, and almost perfect for a beginning author! I’d definitely recommend it!
