Title: Not another French cookbook— a new Paris!

Review: I bought World Food: Paris because of the author, James Oseland. He used to be the editor of Saveur magazine when it was the best ever; and a judge of Bravo’s Top Chef Masters series. I was pretty confident I wouldn’t be disappointed.

And I certainly wasn’t. This isn’t just another Paris-centric cookbook— it’s another Paris.

This is the Paris of a friend’s borrowed apartment, or of a super-cool Air BnB scored against the odds, not the Paris of guidebooks, hotels, and curated restaurant lists. This book has the delight and the waywardness of being in new neighborhoods, coming upon, finding—a real exhilaration of discovery. I’m sure the recipes will be great; I’ve got post-its on many. But for me the pleasure of this book is in where it takes you—with the author’s insider voice guiding you, bringing you to the brink of an alleyway and letting you wander down, drawn by photos in a trance of page-turning (the book is lovely to touch) to imagined scents, sounds and to meet authentic Parisians you wouldn’t otherwise meet.

It's a real experience in what’s been our all-too virtual world. And it’s inspiring me to think not just about what I’ll make, but who I’ll eat it with. It's definitely a book to own, and a book you can confidently give any Paris-loving friends—it definitely won't be deja vu.

Review: As a Parisian, I observed and helped for two years, first hand, the incredible journalism and patience it took Mr. Oseland to research this book in Paris. I've long thought that someone ought to write such a book about French food; one that collects and shares quintessential flavors and recipes beyond what most people think French food is about. Cooking is our collective human heritage and with respect, Oseland tackles what is at a Nation's culinary core and shares it.

That this condensed idea is available to share makes me elated - this is French Food!

I don't know Mexican food as well, but what I've gleaned from that book too is pure gold. Oseland is a chameleon in the kitchen.

I write this review now as I had seen recently a NYTimes review calling it 'colonialist'...
Wow!! What has culture come to when a world class food journalist pours his heart and soul into making a book as authentic and quintessential as possible (and the recipes really do hold) and gets labeled by the 'woke' thought police as 'colonialist' (in France to boot)! Too much NYTIMES, too much.
No wonder the French like to make fun of Americans ;) From a French POV, this book is full of respect and love.

Long short, if you are tempted by easy and delicious food from different cultures, sign up for this series - Oseland is the real deal and delivers.

Review: I'm sure it's hard to write a cookbook nowadays!

I don't want a book that only has recipes. There is the internet for that. And I don't want each recipe to start with a long story about the writer's family. Again, if I wanted that I'd buy a non-fiction book. But also, I don't want to pay a lot of money for a bunch of glossy pictures like a huge coffee-table photography album.

Instead, Jim Oseland did a great job with the mixture of features that make up this book.

There are recipes I would actually make; simple ones, and also some more complex foods, too. And there are beautiful pictures that reminds me of trips I've taken to Paris. But one thing I really love is the way it's not trying to be a survey of all French food. There's Julia Child for that. Instead, I got a real feeling of what it would be like to live in Paris, and what residents really eat like. The size of the book (not too big or thick) and price are right, too.

I have James's other book on Mexico City, and I really like that one as well. I look forward to other volumes in this series.

Title: Gorgeous Book With Recipe Gems

Review: I love cooking, but rarely find recipes I want to add to my rotation. I found myself flagging all kinds of things in this one!

It has your standard Americanized-French food (French Toast) that has been translated back into French influence like a conversation between culinary thought. (I honestly choose to stick with the challah french toast my mom taught me to make since it's the absolute best, but I am biased because she's my mom.) What really caught my attention were the braising and roasting recipes.

I lack confidence with my oven roasting skills, but I'm looking forward to brushing up my technique and trying to roast that perfect chicken. (I'm already a huge fan of the Beef Bourguignon. Yum!) This book is no culinary institute course or instagram polished material for a fussy influencer, but if you're looking for a solid foundation I highly encourage you give it a shot!

Title: Off to a very good start

Review: Paris is the second book in James Oseland's World Food series; the first was Mexico City. The superb photography immediately catches the eye, and Oseland's writing is engaging and interesting, the recipes carefully curated. Good on the coffee table and in the kitchen. Too often, accurate recipe testing takes a backseat to visual style and content but not so here. The three recipes I've tried so far--the potato gratin on the cover, turnips with cinnamon, and the carrot vinaigrette--have produced very good results.

I recommend all of Oseland's books--New Comfort Food is a favorite. He's a globetrotter and former editor of Saveur, and writes primarily about home cooking in different cultures. I look forward to the next book in this series, wherever that may take us.

Review: I am and always have been a voracious reader. I never thought I would sit and read a cookbook cover to cover, but I did this one. From the interesting background information to a sneak peak into the lives of everyday Parisians and their love of food paired with the incredible photography, I was hooked even before studying the recipes. I have never been known for my expertise in the kitchen, but many of these recipes are simple enough for me. I will lure family members into creating the others as they sound (and look) too delicious not to savor. Excellent book!
