Title: Better than your average drug hazed celebrity tell-alls

Review: I'll read any book that has to do with pre-punk, punk, proto-metal and all kinds of other music. And let me tell you, I've slogged through some excruciating duds, with the determination of a rat making its way through a garbage dump looking for that one tasty morsel of new information. At the beginning I feared this book would be like that. An also-ran/hanger-on writes badly about the drugs they took and the celebrities they sucked off in dirty bathrooms. Fortunately, Philippe Marcade is much more than that. Yes, his early adventures are pretty inconsequential anecdotes, as he defects from college and his military duties in France for an On The Road style trip across America. Having gotten that out of the way after the first third of the book, things pick up as he starts to get involved in the music scene, develops a sincere relationship with Johnny Thunders, and forms his own band.

I had heard of The Senders, but assumed they were just also-rans who played CBGBs and Max's. He was also a big fan of Mink Deville, who were clearly talented, but I could never really get into them. It was a big shock when I listened to the Outrageous & Contagious compilation and learned they were pretty great. As a glam punk garage band, they weren't groundbreaking like some of their peers, but they had some great songs. And best of all, Marcade's voice is a fantastic, gutteral combination of Bon Scott and Alex Harvey. It's a damn shame their EP Seven Song Super Single (1980) and debut album, Retour a l'Envoyeur (1981) remain out of print, with most of the songs missing from the compilation.

As you can tell, clearly the best part of the book for me was discovering his band. This is an autobiography, not a great historical account, though there are some fun details about some players in the scene. His crush on Debbie Harry is predictable yet somehow charming. His treatment of women is not always great as is par for the 70s, but his description of Nancy Spungen is surprisingly empathetic. The accounts of drug use and addiction are soul crushingly boring as always, but eh, that's rock 'n' roll I suppose. At its best, you can imagine being there, looking over his shoulder as he strides the streets of the gritty 1970s era Bowery.

Review: Even without rose-tinted shades, it ain’t much of a stretch to slot 1970s downtown NYC alongside Weimar Berlin of the 1920s or the Parisian Left Bank of the 1930s. The socio-political and economic climates of each combined to fertilize an environment that was sympathetic towards creative misfits of every variety; where rules were discarded in the worlds of art, film, literature and music, and bold new ideas were bashed into shape -- their true merits and vitality only validated by the masses decades after the fact.

Marcadé stumbled stateside in the early 1970s, quickly winding his way to NYC, where his world would collide not only with the nascent art [Nan Goldin] and film [Waters’ Dreamlanders] worlds, but also with the earliest rumblings of countless bands and musicians whom the laziest critics would lump together under the label of punk. Armed with a deep and sincere passion for righteous forefathers like Bo Diddley and Wynonie Harris, Marcadé left his own indelible mark on the music scene through forming The Senders -- a superb band not miles away from Mink DeVille and Dr Feelgood, but without being a cheap secondhand copy of either.

His world was gritty and greasy and seldom dull, and he went beyond participation and observance by embracing it throughout the ups and the downs. And while Marcadé was absolutely an avid and eager collector of experiences, Punk Avenue would be a very different book without his natural gifts as a first-class raconteur of the highest order.

It’s a fitting legacy: the book is Flip, and Flip is the book -- class, grace, style, humor, wit and, as anyone who knows him will add, charm.

Title: Just a terrific book.

Review: I would recommend this book alongside "Please Kill Me" and "Twentieth Century Boy" and some of the Cookie Mueller books too (if you can find them at decent prices). Then I'd also recommend Ron Padgett's memoir of Joe Brainard, the "Ceci N'est Pas" autobiography from Keith and Rosmarie Waldrop, and perhaps something from Donald Barthelme (or even the "Hiding Man" biography of him). All convey a time, place, and attitude that's worth lingering in, full of humor and warmth and all the passion and the insanity of youth. Reading them are all among my greatest pleasures during the pandemic, with "Punk Avenue" perhaps the most unexpectedly delightful.

Review: I am not a writer or book reviewer, so this wont be detailed and eloquent.

This book was the punk rock equivalent of "Forrest Gump". This man, Philip, was standing next to, in the room, bumping into, or in a band with EVERYONE. If something happened he was there to witness it and tell the story. The fact that it's all true is just a bonus, it'd be an incredible read even if it was pure fiction. It's fun, its heartbreaking, its FUNNY, and surprising. I had never heard of The Senders or Philip Marcade before purchasing it. I'm a fan of early punk and figured what the hell, why not since I can't afford to buy Cheetah Chrome's book until its reprinted. I am so glad I checked this out. I can not recommend it enough.

Review: One of the more entertaining rock and roll reads I have ever picked up. Phil Marcade was a French kid, that fell in to some crazy adventures while traveling throughout America in the early seventies. He does eventually settle in New York City, the setting for most of the book. Marcade, as spectator and musician becomes another colorful character in the cast of many, detailing events playing in bands and befriending some of the musicians that would make history from the era (including The Cramps, Ramones, and notably Johnny Thunders). The shadow of the Dolls, and Thunders looms large here, as Phil and Johnny became fast friends, and really grew to know one another over time. Cannot recommend this enough, it's a relatively short book (just over 200 pages), but what it has got to communicate, and how the author manages this, makes the book truly memorable.
