Title: Your 315lb Math and Life Coach

Review: I became particularly interested in John Urschel after reading his nyt opinion piece “Math Teachers Should be More Like Football Coaches.” As a math major (30 years ago) who forewent a PhD program for a life in math-related jobs, from actuarial student to bond trader on Wall Street, my true love was always just teaching math. Urschel is more gifted both physically and intellectually than I ever was, or ever will be, but he remains an inspiration. It is not only his amazing work ethic, but his clear-minded focus on what he wants out of life, his loyalty to friends and family, and his integrity both emotionally and intellectually that is stunning. This book articulated his struggles quite eloquently - and was a joy to read.

Review: I know next to nothing about football and only the basics of math. I know of John from the chess world, which only comes up a little in this book. But this was a fascinating read. He divides the book into chapters on math and football. In the math chapters he often describes a fairly complex mathematical notion in a way that's clear to somebody who doesn't even know calculus. It was also fascinating to learn a little bit about what mathematics education and professionalization look like at the graduate school level. Even though I've never been interested in football, he made that seem interesting to me too. The account of what it's like to play the game and particularly the combination of big picture strategies and his description of the subtleties of what it's like to be on the ground really kept my interest and kind of make me want to learn more about football.

Title: Fascinating Life and Book!

Review: I was thrilled to get an advance copy of this book and thought I might read a chapter or two on a cross-country flight, in between a nap and in-flight movie. To my surprise, I never put it down. I read the book cover to cover! Urschel has led a fascinating life and the story reads almost like a movie.

I appreciated the clear explanations of both math and football - neither of which is a particularly strong interest of mine. Both were made interesting and accessible.

Moreover, the book is beautifully written by Urschel and Thomas. The writing flows.

Finally, I am an academic myself so this peek into the world of PhD programs, research, publishing, and academia was refreshingly accurate.

Highly recommend!

Title: Athlete-mathematician juxtaposes accounts of his two loves, could have gone deeper.

Review: I wanted to like this book more. I've always been fascinated by how the mind of a good mathematician works. G.H. Hardy and Jacques Hadamard made notable contributions to this genre. This book is not on that level, but it did provide affirmation of the mathematical life, and helped me to understand how an intelligent person could also be passionately attached to the barbarity that is football. (I earned a Ph.D. in math 50 years ago, and haven't used it in any significant way, but the process of getting it was exhilarating and hard, and I flatter myself that I can appreciate a good effort in the field. As to football, I'm a recovered fan.) I am admiring of John Urschel's passion in pursuing a mathematical problem for the sake of the problem, and of his pursuit of hard problems in several different subfields.
The alternation of chapters between football and mathematics is a good structural choice, as it keeps the reader from getting bogged down in the technical aspects of either career. I expected that he was building towards a choice between the two fields, but when it came, it was under-explained. One day he was planning to return to the NFL, and then he didn't. The motivation is pretty clear -- physical deterioration, and the risk of head injuries to an undersized and overachieving offensive lineman, plus a baby on the way -- but more explanation of the internal arguments would have made this a more interesting book.
Co-writing credit is given to Louisa Thomas, a sportswriter for The New Yorker magazine, who is also Urschel's life partner. I would have loved to have heard her voice in the story; I'm sure it was significant. But it's not there at all in the telling, and that's a missed opportunity.
Other reviewers have said they skipped over the math descriptions. Coming from a different place, I wish he would have gone into more detail on his own work, and less on the sort of examples that can be found in numerous math-for-the-layman books. I understand why he didn't, but that's my druthers.
I learned more about football-passion than about math-mind-at-work. I have been baffled by the devotion to the game of friends and relatives who have played it. I think I've gained some tolerance by reading this book, because he puts it side-by-side with a pursuit that I can identify with.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, but it could have gone deeper in more than one of its areas of concern.

Title: Brilliant man

Review: Saw every Penn State home game in which John played, including his first game against Indiana at the Washington NFL stadium. He was wonderful and I really enjoyed the portions of the book that addressed football. Everyone knew he was a brilliant math student. Up to about half way through, I read everything in the book about the math. But then it became too complicated and I didn't understand it so I would just skim those sections. I would have liked more reminiscences about football and less mathematical theory. Btw, I did get to meet him once and he was a very gracious person. Shaking his hand was like shaking paws with a bear. And he did sign his autograph to me as "To ......, the only woman I've ever loved.". (At my request).

Title: An inspiring, informative and entertaining book

Review: This was an inspiring, informative and entertaining book about a “jock” who is also a physics Brainiac. It dispels a lot of myths about jocks. I read it in a few sittings, I couldn’t put it down. It gave an inside look at how football operates from the inside, the personal toll on players and how a person can balance playing professional football AND pursue a PhD in Physics. I found the discussion on college vs pro ball particularly interesting -- college players seem to experience it as a team bonding experience. Pro ball has evolved into more of an “it’s a job” experience. I may be overstating the case to a degree. I highly recommend this book.
