Marie Curie is the only scientist in history to be awarded Nobel prizes in two different categories, she was awarded her first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 for her work on radiation, and a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011 for her discovery and work on radium and polonium

Marie Curie, née Maria Sklodowska, was born in Warsaw on November 7, 1867, the daughter of a secondary-school teacher. She received a general education in local schools and some scientific training from her father.

Marie Curie is remembered for her discovery of radium and polonium, and her huge contribution to finding treatments for cancer.

Indefatigable despite a career of physically demanding and ultimately fatal work, she discovered polonium and radium, championed the use of radiation in medicine and fundamentally changed our understanding of radioactivity. Curie was born Marya Skłodowska in 1867 in Warsaw.
