The Bouddhanath Stupa is one of the largest stupas in Nepal and a major Buddhist pilgrimage site. Located about 7 km from central Kathmandu
Also known as Khāsti, it stands at 36 meters tall and has a diameter of approximately 100 meters.
The stupa was likely built in the 5th century CE and underwent renovations and additions in the following centuries.
It is built in the shape of a mandala and contains relic chambers inside the dome. Pilgrims can enter from one of the four doors to walk around the harmika (small tower) at the top.
The stupa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is sacred to Tibetan Buddhists and visited by many Tibetan refugees.
Surrounding the monument are monasteries, temples, shops, and restaurants, making it a major hub of Tibetan culture in Nepal.
Pilgrims walk clockwise around the dome to complete a kora (ritual circumambulation). Spinning the prayer wheels while circling is considered auspicious.
The stupa survived the 2015 earthquake in Nepal with only minor damage. It is still an important destination for Buddhists and tourists alike. You visit this heritage site during a full-day Kathmandu City Tour.
