Your ability to be Self aware gives you great power over your distractions.

YOUR MEDITATION NEEDS AWARENESS

One way you are sure that you are meditating is by awareness.  Awareness is the cautiousness and activeness of the mind being present throughout the process of meditation. This is basically only possible by the presence of two things; your thoughts and your emotions. Overtime, because the things you know or are aware of changes, the fact that you are aware remains unchanged throughout your experiences. What mediations does is that it allows you to have more perspectives to these thoughts and emotions by seeing them for what they are.

OBSERVE YOUR VISONS AND LET THEM GO

One very important area for awareness during meditation is VISION.  Your ability to see your thoughts and not controlling them is what makes the difference. The moment you begin to analyse, control or direct your visions, you are no longer meditating, you have become distracted. So just like you do with every other thing, simply observe it and let it pass. When meditating, one golden understanding you should have is that you must learn to sit most especially with the thoughts you do not want, notice them and then let them pass. This is what makes it impossible for those thoughts to have a grip on you and by doing so you would be in charge.

Another reason you should try by all means not to analyse, control or absorb these visions during the process of meditation is also because your mind already has certain pictures of expectations that could also appear as illusions aimed at distracting you from the overall meditation experience. Letting them go and concentrating on the exercise would mean that you are aware of these moments and you are not by any means distracted.

MEDITATION SHARPENS YOUR PERCEPTION BETTER

Perception is one process that links actively your body and mind for one purpose. You have perceptual abilities and its your meditations that helps sharpen them. This is what helps you to develop a more realistic and objective approach to the world around you. To help strengthen your level of perception, meditation would have to be a regular activity for you. You are not only strengthening the mind but you are also strengthening the way you reason, relate and understand the environment around you. Practically, constant meditation will change the way your brain reacts to stress and as a result will possibly reduce anxiety and lower your blood pressure. Your continuous meditation however would ultimately help your brain interpret better, the things you see, hear, smell and even feel as it correlates with your previous memory, or perception. Your perception therefore strengthens your level of awareness during meditation in other to direct your mind on what really matters.

SELF-AWARENESS IS THE GOAL

During meditation, you need self-awareness and one way to developing this is by acknowledging the thoughts, emotions and feelings that emanates from within you during and throughout this process. Practically, this can be achieved by being focused, thereby creating the space from within your consciousness to identify these emotions without any interference from the external environment. Your aim however is to identify and quantify these thoughts and patterns without judgements. As it is it with being self-aware, you are intentional about everything that surrounds your disposition throughout your time of meditation. You can do this by paying attention to everything from your visions, to your sense of smell, sense of touch, explore the temperature, the air, the ground and the things around you. Remember, don’t compare, contrast, analyse or judge your experience or experiences. If in the process, your thoughts come to mind, take note of them and gently let them go. Bring your consciousness back to your direct experience. This is you being mindful, self-aware and maximizing the benefits of meditation.
