The issue of gender is often talked about in passing but is never really prioritized. Gender has a huge impact on many social, political and economic structures. Gender awareness is necessary because no one is ever completely able to 'step outside' of the social and cultural processes that partly shape our identities, values and perceptions, but we can still develop ways of reflecting and ways of interrogating ourselves, and this is very important for group work. Gender and sexuality are centrally important forces that shape every aspect of our lives: we know our bodies, minds and selves through our gender and our sex. as a society, legal definitions and social expectations about women and men sex and reproduction organize our medical, legal, educational and political systems.
