Bricks are fundamental and form the building blocks when constructing a home. Similarly, cement is the bonding agent that holds everything together. Modern structures are rarely possible without the use of this binding component. Today, multiple varieties of cement are widely available. However, when building your dream home, you should choose the best house construction cement. This offers the desired outcome and ensures durability.
There are mainly three broad categories of cement used for house construction. These include the following:
Portland Pozzolana Cement
Portland Pozzolana Cement is a blended cement manufactured by heating clay and limestone to temperatures of approximately 800 to 1,000 degrees Celsius. This is later combined with pozzolanic materials and gypsum to form PPC. This cement variety has a low heat of hydration, is less prone to cracking, and is economical. It is eco-friendly and mainly used for brick masonry, plastering, and waterproofing. PPC is also resistant to alkaline-based reactions or marine corrosion.
Ordinary Portland Cement
Ordinary Portland Cement is the most widely used cement variety in construction projects. It is produced by combining limestone and other raw materials and is available in multiple grades. The grade depends on the concrete's compression strength after setting it for 28 days. Typically, grade 53 cement is recommended for building houses.
Portland Slag Cement
Portland Slag Cement is made using Portland Cement clinker, gypsum, and granulated blast furnace slag. The slag is a by-product of smelting iron ore. Hence, PSC is a sustainable cement variant. It is highly corrosion-resistant and widely used for construction near the cost. It is also resistant to chloride and sulphate attacks.
Which is the best?
So, which of the three types, i.e., PPC, OPC, or PSC, should you choose as your house construction cement? The answer to this question depends on the following factors:
Duration of work
If you want the work to finish faster, opt for OPC. This cement takes less time to settle than PPC and gives immediate strength to the project. This, in turn, speeds up the construction process and helps save costs. Hence, OPC works as the go-to cement when you want rapid
construction.
Type of work
If you want to build structural elements of the house, such as columns, beams, etc., OPC is a good choice. On the other hand, PPC provides an excellent finish and is suitable for plastering. However, if you choose super PPC cement, you can conveniently use it to construct beams and build a strong foundation for the building to transmit the load efficiently to the earth.
Location
The cement type you select for a house also depends on the geography of the place. Therefore, corrosion-resistant PSC can be a good choice for construction near the shore. Depending on your location, you can also use a PPC variant suitable for all geographies.
