Definition of Intrinsic Motivation
Intrinsic motivation can refer to actions that are driven by internal rewards. The motivation to engage in behavior can arise from within because of satisfaction with an activity rather than a desire for a reward or outcome. It normally distinguishes between internal and external rewards and occurs when people act without any external rewards. They simply enjoy an activity and view it as a way to learn, explore opportunities, and actualize potential (Cherry, 2022).
Types of Intrinsic Motivations
According to Delta (2022), there are three (3) types of intrinsic motivation. They are autonomy, mastery, and purpose.
· Autonomy - more likely to engage in activities that we have chosen to do (Delta, 2022).
· Mastery – more likely intrinsically motivated to get better things that matter to us (Delta, 2022).
· Purpose – more likely motivated when our actions are something larger than ourselves (Delta, 2022).
Orthopedic Impairment
Orthopedic impairment can be defined as a bone-, joint-, or muscle-related disability that is severe and negatively affects a child’s educational performance. It can range from genetic abnormalities to disorders like cerebral palsy or other issues (Logsdon, 2022).
Intrinsic Motivation Strategy
According to Sutton (2021), the following are strategies to effect intrinsic motivation in your classroom as a teacher: satisfy your learner’s psychological needs, engage in storytelling, find your one-sentence goal, give learners rewards, and give praises to your learners.
Benefits of Intrinsic Motivation
According to Marinoff (2022), “Intrinsic motivation is a stronger predictor of job performance. When people are internally driven to execute a task, they simply do it for the enjoyment of the activity. Hence, they normally keep going daily because they feel inspired, happy, driven, and satisfied with themselves. Internally motivated attitudes are intertwined with things that are of higher purpose.
Factors that Influence Intrinsic Motivation
According to Cherry(2022), the following are factors that influence intrinsic motivation: challenge, control, competition and cooperation, curiosity, and recognition.
