Manchester United fans want Sofyan Amrabat out of the club after his terrible mistake gifted Erling Haaland his goal which sealed United’s defeat in the derby.

Erik ten Hag’s side headed to the Etihad as the unfancied and written off outfit given the two sides’ league positions, form and squad availabilities on Sunday. But United stunned their neighbours with a 25-yard rocket from Marcus Rashford that thundered into the roof of Manchester City’s net to give them the lead.

But after a determined defensive resolve, two pieces of magic from Phil Foden in the second half turned the game on its head and gave City the lead. However, United were still in the game until Amrabat was robbed on the edge of his own box by Rodri, who fed Erling Haaland to finally notch his derby goal and seal the win.

The Moroccan’s mistake comes with United fans already at the end of their tether with the midfielder who has failed to show any kind of quality which made him integral to his country’s World Cup semi-final run in Qatar.

Though the 27-year-old is only on a season-long loan from Fiorentina, United paid £8.5million to take him on the initial loan with a potential buy option of £21.4m – which fans are hoping isn’t taken up.

One comment on Twitter said: “Amrabat can’t get out of my club quick enough. He’s Conference level.” A second pleaded: “Terminate Amrabat’s loan after the game man.” While a third claimed: “Amrabat by far our worst signing of the post Fergie era, possibly one of the worst players to have ever played for Manchester United. Bottom tier.”

After pursuing Amrabat for the majority of the summer transfer window, Ten Hag eventually got his man on deadline day with FFP limitations saving the Red Devils from being lumped with the midfielder on a permanent basis. Amrabat’s woeful cameo against City was just his third Premier League appearance of 2024 and United fans will be hoping it’s his last.
