Healthline reports that most nail care products such as nail polish, nail hardener, and other nail care products contain toxic ingredients that can dry the keratin layers of your nails and cause serious irreversible health hazards ranging from respiratory diseases to cancer. Mary Lennon, the founder of Côte in a Healthline publication, said that human nails are porous, hence anything you paint on them will be absorbed into the bloodstream and affect you either negatively or positively. Therefore, avoid any nail care product that contains any of the four ingredients listed below.

Medindia affirms that Formaldehyde is a popular carcinogen added to nail hardeners to give nail polishes a long-lasting look. What we might not know is that this toxic chemical seeps into our bloodstream through the nails and breaks down the reproductive organs. More so, if you inhale it for a long time, you may develop respiratory tract diseases.

Any nail polish containing toluene should also be avoided. The reason for this is that toluene affects both the peripheral and central neurological systems, including the brain and spinal cord. Moreover, it may irritate the eye and result in constant headaches.

Dibutyl phthalate is a harmful organic compound that is now banned in many European countries. Although it adds flexibility to nail polish, it causes extreme damage to the female reproductive tract and could lead to the development of ovarian cysts.

Acetone is another unsafe organic chemical added to nail polish remover. Do not use any nail care commodity that contains acetone because it heightens the risks of skin cancer and dermatitis. It is also known to cause serious throat allergies, nausea, and dizziness.

So when next you visit a nail salon or store, please purchase or apply nail care products that do not contain any of the aforementioned carcinogens.
