INT. A SMALL, CRAMPED APARTMENT - DAY

A young boy named JIMMY sits on a worn couch, staring at the ceiling. He is wearing a threadbare t-shirt and pants that are too big for him. The room is sparsely furnished and there are cracks in the walls.

JIMMY (V.O)

Life has been tough since my parents passed away. I never realized how hard it was to make ends meet until I was on my own.

Cut to:

A FLASHBACK - JIMMY WITH HIS PARENTS

Jimmy is laughing with his parents at the dinner table. They are happy and joking with each other.

BACK TO PRESENT DAY

JIMMY (V.O)

Now, I struggle to put food on the table and pay the rent on time. I don't have many friends and I feel alone most of the time.

Jimmy stands up from the couch and walks over to a window. He looks out at the busy street below, but he is lost in thought.

JIMMY (V.O)

I wish I could go back to the way things were. To when I had a family and a roof over my head. But I have to be strong and keep going. I have to find a way to make a better life for myself.

Jimmy takes a deep breath and turns from the window. He walks over to a small table where he has a few books stacked.

JIMMY (V.O)

I'm going to start by educating myself. I want to learn as much as I can and make something of myself. I know it won't be easy, but I have to try.

Jimmy picks up one of the books and opens it. He begins to read and a small smile appears on his face.

JIMMY (V.O)

Maybe, just maybe, I can create a better future for myself.

The camera pans out of the window and into the sky, showing the bright sun shining down on the city. The sound of busy traffic and people talking can be heard in the background.
