"I think, therefore I am." - René Descartes

"I think, therefore I am" is a famous philosophical statement made by René Descartes. It is one of the foundational elements of his philosophy of epistemology, which is concerned with the nature of knowledge and how we come to know things.

The quote means that the very act of thinking and doubting one's own existence is proof of the existence of the self. Descartes believed that the mind was distinct from the body and that the mind could understand and think about the world in a more certain way than the senses could.

In essence, Descartes was trying to establish a firm foundation for knowledge by doubting everything he had previously believed to be true. He did this in order to find something that was certain and indubitable, which he could then use as the starting point for further inquiry. By reaching the conclusion that he was thinking, Descartes established the certainty of his own existence, which he used as the foundation for his philosophy.
