Cubic Feet Calculator

Use this cubic feet calculator to figure out how big a space is or how much an object can hold based on its width, length, height, and area.

We often don't consider the weight of the items we get in our day-to-day routine. Pounds and Kilograms are the two primary units of weight. Some companies state the weight in Pounds, while others use Kilograms. Converting Pounds to Kilograms is fairly straightforward.

How to calculate cubic feet

To figure out how many cubic feet an object or space has, measure its length, width, and height in feet, and then multiply those three numbers together: length width height.

Not every day, but there will be times when you need to figure out how much something can hold. Instead of staring blankly into the trunk of your car, getting a headache from trying to find the biggest bathtub, or crying when you have to decide whether to buy a new fridge-freezer or oven, just take charge!

To figure out the volume or capacity in cubic feet, you only need to measure the length, width, and height. But it's important to be aware of what you're measuring.

Getting the fridge's length, width, and height

For example, if you want to know how many cubic feet a fridge can hold, you need to measure the space inside the fridge, not its outside dimensions. Here, you can read about how to measure a refrigerator.

Once you have the three measurements, you just multiply them together to get the answer.

Volume in cubic feet = (in feet) Length x (in feet) Width x (in feet) Height (feet)

Calculating irregular shapes

If the shape isn't regular, break it up in your mind into regular parts and figure out the volume of each one before adding them all up.

For example, an L-shaped cabinet made to fit in the corner of a room could be treated as two different rectangles, one longer and one shorter. Just figure out how much each one can hold, then add them all up to find out how much the cabinet can hold in total.

Changes from other units to feet

When you shop online, you may only see the size of something in inches. When you look at plans for a room, the measurements might be given in metres or yards. But don't be afraid! You only need to add one more step to your calculations to get the cubic feet number...

If you need to go from inches to cubic feet, divide the final number (the sum you get when you multiply the three dimensions) by 1728.

If you want to go from metres to cubic feet, multiply the final number by 35.31.

If you need to go from yards to cubic feet, multiply the number you get by 27.

If you have a number in square feet and want to turn it into cubic feet, all you have to do is multiply it by the height. Or, you can use our tool to change units.

Let's go through each of the calculations one by one...

How to figure out cubic feet from inches

If you measured the length, width, and height of your item in inches, do the following:

Add up the numbers for length, width, and height to get the volume in cubic inches (in3)

Divide the whole amount by 1728. (as there are 1728 cubic inches in a cubic foot).

How to convert inches to cubic feet

Let's say you want to know how much can fit inside a refrigerator that is 64" wide, 28" deep, and 29" tall. Here's how it works...

Add up your inches: 64 times 28 times 29 equals 51968 cubic inches.

The answer is 30.074 cubic feet if you divide 51968 by 1728.

Then you can use the calculator at the top of the page to compare your answer. Later in this article, we'll look at some more examples of how to calculate in the real world.

How to figure out cubic feet from metres

If you've measured the length, width, and height of your item in metres, do the following:

Add up the length, width, and height of your box to get the volume in cubic metres (m3)

Divide the sum by 35.31.

How to figure out cubic feet from yards

If you have measured your item's length and width in yards, do the following:

When you add up the length, width, and height, you get the volume in cubic yards (yd3)

Divide the sum by 27. (as there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard).

Once you've done the math, you can compare your answer to the one at the top of this page. Then, if you want to order a certain amount of material or liquid, you may want to change your number to gallons.

How to change the number of cubic inches to feet

One foot is the same as 1728 inches. To convert between cubic inches and cubic feet, divide the number of cubic inches by 1728. Try the volume converter if you don't want to do this by hand.

In the real world:

Let's look at a few situations where you might need to figure out how many cubic feet something is...

Example 1: I want to buy my daughter a dress-up box, but I can't decide between two that look different in size. I can't tell just by looking which one can hold more costumes.

Box A is 70" x 30" x 30" = 63,000".

63,000 divided by 1728 (the number of cubic inches in a cubic foot) = 36.45. That makes it 36.45ft3

Box B is 60" x 28" x 45" = 75,600".

75,600 cubic inches divided by 1728 cubic feet equals 43.75.

That makes it 43.75ft3. Box B can hold more, so I will buy that one.

Let's try something else...

Example 2: My friend is driving us on a trip, and I need to figure out how much stuff I can bring.

The trunk of her car is in the shape of a L because there is a place to store a toolbox in one corner. The larger rectangle of the L is 60" x 30" x 35", and the smaller rectangle is 18" x 14" x 35".

Larger rectangle

60 x 30 x 35 = 63,000.

Divide 63,000 by 1728 and you get 36.45.

Smaller rectangle

18 times 14 times 35 is 8,820, and 8,820 divided by 1728 is 5.10.

When you add the two sizes together (36.45ft3 + 5.1ft3), you get 41.55ft3.

We suggest using the cubic feet calculator at the top of the page to check your work.
