How to use Contrave

Read the Medication Guide if available from your pharmacist before you start taking naltrexone/bupropion and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth with a low-fat meal as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily.

You may have trouble sleeping when you start taking this drug. Do not take your evening dose too close to bedtime.

Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush or chew this medication. Doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects such as seizures.

Can Contrave (naltrexone / bupropion) cause seizures?

Yes, people have had seizures while taking Contrave (naltrexone / bupropion), and the risk of a seizure might be higher if you're taking higher doses of Contrave (naltrexone / bupropion). Don't take Contrave (naltrexone / bupropion) if you have a history of seizures or eating disorders (anorexia or bulimia), if you've recently stopped drinking alcohol, or if you've recently stopped taking certain anxiety, sleep, headache, or seizure medications. Avoid taking Contrave (naltrexone / bupropion) with a high-fat meal, such as meals with eggs, avocado, peanut butter, or cheese. This can make the medication reach very high levels in your body, which can raise your risk of having a seizure.

Warnings

You should not use Contrave if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, seizures, an eating disorder, opioid addiction, if you take opioid medicine or other forms of bupropion, have bulimia or anorexia nervosa, are taking a MAOI, or if you have suddenly stopped using alcohol, seizure medication, or a sedative.

Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using. Many drugs can interact with bupropion and naltrexone, and some drugs should not be used together.
