Overview
Bettencourt is a physicist and consultant to the CIA and uses his state-of-the-art eavesdropping spyware to collect vital military intelligence from Iran and Syria, that is until he almost dies from an assassination attempt. Turner Largeant takes his case to exact retribution for Bettencourt's permanent injuries. Jim Burroughs is CIA Deputy Chief of Strategic Intelligence who has been tasked to manage a secret group whose sole purpose is to thwart Bettencourt's efforts to bring a public lawsuit, all done in the name of protecting national security. Turner, a busy trial lawyer, delegates to Bridget, his first-year associate, the task of working with Bettencourt to develop a case for trial. Bridget is adopted and learns her biological parents are German having conceived Bridget at the height of the clash between East and West Berlin. The fact gnaws at Bridget resulting in confused loyalties. One member of Burroughs' secret group is Patrick McInerney, a recently recalled CIA clandestine operative whose skills Burroughs may need to ensure the group's success. Meanwhile, while his investigation begins to make progress identifying the assassins, Turner cultivates a source inside the CIA to snoop around. Largeant and McInerney lock deadly horns in a battle of survival and wits. Yet, undaunted, Largeant files a lawsuit still without a critical link to a terrorist organization.
