Tribe That Eats Their Dead Instead Of Burying Them

The Yanomami people, also known as Yanam and Senema, are found in Venezuela and a few places in Brazil. Members of this tribe are adamant about sticking to their customs and are not readily persuaded to accept Western ways of thinking.

According to https://guardian.ng/life/yanomami-tribe/, members of the Yanomami tribe consume the flesh of the dead once they are buried.

This group of people practice a peculiar funeral ritual that uncannily mimics cannibalism. Endocannibalism is the practice of eating a deceased person who belonged to the same tribe, society, or civilisation as oneself.

Yanomami natives have the belief that a person's spirit must be retained even after death. They believe that before the soul can truly rest and pass away, the body must be eaten by living family members.

Instead of the more common practice of burying their deceased in a tomb, members of this native Indian tribe burn the body and use the ash to paint their faces. They sing and lament to show their grief over the loss of a loved one.

The cremated remains' ashes are combined with bone powder from the second stage of interment.

All tribe members receive the customary cuisine of banana soup, which is made with this ingredient and mashed bananas.

They believe that unless this process is carried out, the soul won't be able to rest in peace for all time.

However, when a stranger kills a local or a member of their family, only the ladies consume the ashes before taking revenge. Just before the villagers undertake a potential raid in revenge on the enemy's territory, the ritual is conducted.

What impressions you had of the tribe's members and their customs intrigued me. I have to admit, that really makes me nervous.
