5 Things You Shouldn’t Do When You Have Running Stomach (Diarrhoea)

According to Healthline, whenever you experience diarrhoea, otherwise called running stomach, the foods you eat, drink or avoid, as well as the activities you partake in, determine how quickly your recovery will be. Asides from the fact that you need to strictly monitor your diet intake, engaging in strenuous exercises could worsen your condition. This article discusses five key things you absolutely must not do if you’re experiencing diarrhoea.

Do not eat lollipops and citrus fruits.

One survey reports that the sugar (sorbitol) in lollipops and the fibrous content of citrus fruits (orange, lime, lemon) cause the intestine to produce more water and loosen the bowels. This is because they have a strong laxative effect on the digestive system. Notably, laxatives are substances that help you empty your bowels when you have trouble using the toilet. Hence, eating any of the two aforementioned aggravates the state of diarrhoea one is in.

Do not consume dairy items like milk.

According to a recent article in the Everyday Health email, dairy products including milk, butter, cheese, sour cream, and yoghurt may aggravate someone who is experiencing diarrhoea because they contain lactose. Bloating and a looser stomach result from a temporary inability to digest lactose due to the body's increased rate of water loss.

Avoid drinking fizzy beverages and coffee

According to medical news today, fizzy beverages and coffee are diuretics. This implies that ingesting them increases the rate at which we lose water from the body, which worsens the symptoms of diarrhoea.

Do not engage in strenuous exercises

According to Healthline, engaging in strenuous workouts causes abrupt bowel movements and fluctuates digestive hormones. Less water being absorbed by the colon and loose stools may result from this. Take a quick walk to restore the digestive tract’s balance when you have diarrhoea rather than running, jogging, or cycling.

Do not eat food that causes one to fart excessively.

Although it is worthwhile to eat specific legumes, fruits and vegetables, food experts advise that anyone suffering from diarrhoea desist from eating beans, onions and any food that contains sulphur until he/she has fully recovered. They release sulphur and nitrogen compounds into the stomach, causing bloating, foul-smelling burps and uncontrolled farts.

Last but not least, nutritionists suggest that anyone who has a running stomach eat bananas, rice, and boiled potatoes and chew sugar-free gum because these foods control bowel movements and speed up recuperation. Cheers!
