Sunny Cebu

A Short Story

by Paulas Bulosan

Maureen Chan looked at the crumpled guillotine in her hands and felt surprised.

She walked over to the window and reflected on her grand surroundings. She had always loved sunny Cebu with its little, loose lakes. It was a place that encouraged her tendency to feel surprised.

Then she saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the figure of Katy Gump. Katy was a greedy muppet with grubby eyes and moist fingernails.

Maureen gulped. She glanced at her own reflection. She was a sympathetic, patient, squash drinker with grubby eyes and ugly fingernails. Her friends saw her as a victorious, vast vicar. Once, she had even helped a mysterious old lady cross the road.

But not even a sympathetic person who had once helped a mysterious old lady cross the road, was prepared for what Katy had in store today.

The sun shone like skipping goldfish, making Maureen relaxed.

As Maureen stepped outside and Katy came closer, she could see the relieved glint in her eye.

Katy gazed with the affection of 3534 hungry hushed hamsters. She said, in hushed tones, "I love you and I want a kiss."

Maureen looked back, even more relaxed and still fingering the crumpled guillotine. "Katy, d'oh," she replied.

They looked at each other with stable feelings, like two gorgeous, glorious giraffes gyrating at a very splendid funeral, which had orchestral music playing in the background and two splendid uncles bopping to the beat.

Maureen regarded Katy's grubby eyes and moist fingernails. "I feel the same way!" revealed Maureen with a delighted grin.

Katy looked sparkly, her emotions blushing like a rare, relieved record.

Then Katy came inside for a nice beaker of squash.
