九州の有明海に生息するハゼの仲間で、その異様な外見から「エイリアン」と呼ばれる事もあります。 生息域では食用にされ、主に干物にして食べられます。新鮮なものでは刺身や煮付け等で食べられる事もあります。 生命力が強く、活け造りにされても頭部はしばらく生きている事があります。
