日本近海に生息するサメの仲間で、性格は大人しく人間に危害を加える事はほとんどありません。 海底にいる事が多く、貝や甲殻類、ウニなどを食べています。 臼歯状の奥歯で貝などを噛み砕くため「サザエワリ」という別名もあります。
