The Maha vihara, or Sri Lanka's "lion rock", is a natural rock formation at the edge of one of Sri Lanka's lakes. You can find it in almost any region of the country, but because it's located at the edge of the Waruruwela Lake, you can visit it only by boat. Made famous by its association with King Dhammika V and his wife Queen Maha Viradhavatissa (the warrior queen), this ancient location was also a place of conflict between rival Buddhist sects and kingdoms.
