The Stolen Heir: A Novel of Elfhame (The Stolen Heir, 1) by Holly Black (Author)
an excellent return to elfhame. i adore wren and oak. while TFOTA always stayed more true to faerie's nefarious ways than its lighter counterparts (cough, ACOTAR, cough), the stolen heir was decidedly a bit darker than its predecessor.
“Do you ever think about what it would be like to be a queen again?”
wren has been living on her own in the woods of the mortal realm, watching her once unfamily when she's sought out by her once-childhood friend, now prince of elfhame oak. a quest ensues, full of curses, disguises, charms, games, and twists.
"We are no longer children, playing games and hiding beneath his bed, but I feel as though this is a different kind of game, one where I do not understand the rules."
wren is damaged but determined, scared but clever. oak is a roguish prince with a sweet smile and tricks up his sleeve (i forgot how devious the greenbriar line is). he certainly takes after his uncle when it comes to dangerous women.
“What a freeing thought it was to no longer believe I had to deserve something in order to get it.”
i raced through this book and after that ending, i cannot wait for the prisoner's throne.
