It means knowing what you stand for and what your values are, and being accepting of both your strengths and weaknesses. Self-respect is an inner quality that each individual must take time to develop. It comes after experiencing setbacks and failures throughout life and knowing how to rebuild. According to the American Psychological Association, having high self-esteem is key to positive mental health and well-being. High self-esteem matters because it helps you develop coping skills, handle adversity, and put the negative into perspective. Self-respect is the key to building confidence and maintaining healthy relationships with other people throughout your life. So, what is self-respect? Self-respect is acceptance of yourself as a whole person. It doesn't mean you think you're perfect; in fact, we all deserve respect even though we are NOT perfect. Ego and self-respect, both will matters in both love and relationships. Especially in love or marriage life, sometimes we need to surrender our ego to keep the relationship healthy. If you've got no self-respect, you will keep attracting some pretty undesirable people in your life. You're a great person. Trouble is, you don't realize it. You're too busy undermining your own worth that you're not questioning how others treat you. Low self-esteem is when someone lacks confidence about who they are and what they can do. They often feel incompetent, unloved, or inadequate. People who struggle with low self-esteem are consistently afraid about making mistakes or letting other people down.
