After months of mass protests, Mr. Wickremesinghe has been elected to lead the country of Sri Lanka out of its economic collapse and to restore order in the country.

According to BBC NEWS, Mr. Wickremesinghe, who roundly defeated his main opponent for the job, Dullus Alahapperuma was elected Sri Lanka's new president.

Sri Lanka's ex-president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his sit of authority and the country last week after thousands of protesters invaded his official residence and other government buildings, calling for his resignation.

During the protest for the removal of the ex-president, the protesters also called for the resignation of Mr. Wickremesinghe, a close ally of Rajapaksa political family who was appointed Prime Minister in May.

Despite the protest against Mr. Wickremesinghe and the burning of his private residence due to his unfavourable leadership style, many however expressed shock and disappointment on his emergence as the country's new president.
