C'RIVER COMMISSIONER FOR EDUCATION ON A WORKING VISIT TO CR-ITM UGEP

January 11, 2024.

Senator Stephen Odey Ph D , Cross River State Commissioner for Education with some Directors of the Ministry of Education today Thursday, visited Cross River Institute of Technology and Management, Ugep (CR-ITM).

In an opening remark by the Acting Rector, Dr Akintola Abayomi, welcoming the Commissioner and his entourage on behalf of the management and staff of the Institute, the staff were full of excitement that Senator Odey, has come to rescue the CR-ITM from total collapse and thanking the Executive Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, for appointing the best hands, following the laudable achievements of Senator Odey, as the former CR-SUBEB Executive Chairman, they were optimistic that his appointment is well deserved.

The management staff drew the attention of the Commissioner to some challenges facing the Institute resulting to low turn out of students which includes, the running of the Institute by consultants, non existence of School Governing Board, Requesting for indigenous management of the institution, and full presence of Cross River State Government, Etc.

The Commissioner thanked the CR-ITM management staff for their warm reception, stressing that he cannot work alone to transform the Institute but together with their inputs and support much will be achieved. The Commissioner further charged the staff to sit up for proper and effective administration of the Institute, he emphasized they should protect all the facilities and equipment in the Institute as he is a man of due process and all staff should live up to their given responsibilities, he assured them of formulating favourable policies and reforms to bring back CR-ITM to life.

The Commissioner also frowned at the fact that the Substantive Rector Dr Jeffery Thompson has been away for over 5 months, leaving the Institution for the Acting Rector to run the administration of the school without any knowledge of when he will return to his duty post, which is in variance with the laid down procedures. The Commissioner further directed that if no reason is given for his continuous absconsion, drastic disciplinary measures will be metted on the Rector.

The Commissioner further informed that he has received series of petitions against the management of the institution which are under investigation, with the promise that he will brief the Governor to ensure that stability returns to CR-ITM Ugep.

Finally, the Commissioner toured round the Institute and confirmed the sophistication of all the equipments, and solid infrastructures, stressing that they must be put to judicious use as under his watch CR-ITM Ugep must come back alive and add value even to the host community.
