Conviction is worthless unless it is converted into conduct.
(Thomas Carlyle)
They say that studying for an entrance exam is all about "getting laid," but such words and beliefs will not advance you one millimeter. Words and beliefs are meaningless unless they are actually put into action, such as solving math problems or writing English compositions.
This is true, but some students get angry when I tell them.
I used to be a Shorinji Kempo practitioner, but I have always had my doubts about Japanese martial arts. I have wondered about zazen and chigaruko. Does sitting make you stronger? What does going into the cold water have to do with improving one's martial arts skills?
Only sitting. It seems like just getting into cold water. Conviction, the belief that is called the mystery of the East, seems meaningless in the Western mindset. The belief that "I want to get stronger" is meaningless if you just sit around and don't take action (practice).
