Overview

Blue Bayou weaves the lives of a small Louisiana community with the cultural and social effects of the Great War through the Great Depression. Set against the vivid backdrops of Quebec, Atlantic City and northern Louisiana, Blue Bayou examines the conflicts between family and self, future and past, duties and desires. The author's debut novel is a twentieth-century retelling of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. It is told through the eyes of four characters - Rene Lefebvre, an ex-prison warden, a veteran of the Great War, and a former Federal Prohibition Agent who sinks into a drunken stupor after the death of his wife; Lemon Thomas, an abusive gambling addict who cares about nothing except money and his own pride; Effie Thomas, Lemon's rebellious teenage daughter; and Adalyn Bechet, a black girl raised by a wealthy white man. Their storylines often intersect as they experience the same events: the First World War, Prohibition, the Roarin' 20s, the stock market crash of '29, and the Great Depression. The main characters, though originally from all over the map, end up living in the same small Louisiana community, where their lives become entangled, culminating in disastrous events.
