Title: Good coverage of soccer, not as good at philosophy

Review: We are living in an age of excellent popularizers of philosophy. The much-discussed trolley problem, the works of Julian Baggini, and many others are bringing philsophical questions and issues to people in a form more digestible mentally than large chunks of Aristotle or Hume or Spinoza or even Plato. There are dozens of books that claim to lay out the philosophical issues underlying assorted pop culture phenomena.

Now this extends to sports, in the form of soccer. Any game, including soccer, raises plenty of philosophical questions, ranging from issues of beauty to fine points of ethics to the roles of skill and training (nature and nurture). What makes a game different from a practice session with two sides? Why do people with lots of other ways to spend their money and time become attached to one team rather than another? And so on. This book does a decent if not all-star job of presenting these issues. But if you aren't already of a philosophical turn of mind, this book won't turn you that way. It's just not incisive enough for that.

Title: This Book is About Soccer Not American Football

Review: This book is not about American football, but football as most of the world knows it which is soccer. Sadly this does not show up very well when examining this book online for ordering. Fortunately, this is a short book because I think, whether intentional or not, the author has proved there's not much philosophy behind the game of soccer. He obviously loves the game and struggles mightily to make his case. However, chapters addressing topics such as beauty, wholes, space, chance, and victory just seems like the whole thing is being overly thought over. I love the speed and physical conditioning required for soccer which does not have the stop and go of American sports such as football or baseball. Like other team sports, soccer requires team effort although there are individual stars and in any given game, each team - no matter how unlikely - has the opportunity to win. There's really not much philosophy there. I recommend only for passionate soccer fans who can't get enough of the game.

Review: It's a book about football (world variety, not American) and philosophy and if you're not much into either you won't get much from it. If you're into both you might get something from it. Either way, it's not overly long so your feelings on the topics will likely color your view of whether it's a good read or not. Bit too ruminating for my tastes, but I can see where there's a market for it.

Title: Great little read for smart football (soccer) fans

Review: This is a wonderful little book for thinking soccer fans - most of us who enjoy soccer or other sports don't think too hard, but in sport there is actually a lot to think about - what is beauty, why are we fans, what is the meaning of winning and losing, and specifically in soccer, what do the various characteristics of different teams and countries mean. This book is crisp and short and you can tell the author is a big fan of the game - part of the fun is reliving great moments in the sport's history from a philosophic view. A great read!

Title: An average read but nothing profound

Review: I like both soccer and philosophy and am always curious to seem what the intersection of the two are, if possible. It felt like the author was reaching a bit too much instead writing something that was a good read that involved a bit of philosophy. It's a difficult balancing act for sure, but I think erring on the side of more soccer, less philosophy would have been good. Overall it's a decent book to read, but I didn't love it.

Review: Professor Stephen Mumford’s short, thoughtful philosophical analysis of the game of football focuses on team over individual star, its geometric constraints of space, the unpredictable timing of goals, the physicality of its art form, the driving force of victory overall and the communitarianism of team support; in his case, Sheffield United. It is a fun read for football fans.
