Title: Gaius Markus I the inevitable fall of the Republic

Review: This is a good book as far as it goes. The author does a credible job in detailing the career, accomplishments and consequences wrought by Gaius Marius but it is somewhat diminished by the latter sections speculating on the character of Marius and Sulla as critical to abuses that brought down the Republic. This is a modern view - colored by current attitudes. Lift demonstrates how the Republic was doomed to fall after Rome's conquest of Carriage and the Hellenistic world. Markus and Summa were merely instruments of that collapse.

Review: Excellent history about a man who is not as well known as Ceasar. But had just as great, if not more, of an impact on late Republican Rome. Sometimes it's hard to read about historical events or people. With all the different names and such. I found this to be very easy to read and understand. If you want to know how Rome got to the fall of the Republic and the assasination of Ceasar, read this book for sure.

Title: Caesar's Uncle - Marius and Sulla paved the road for he rise of Julius Caesar

Review: I learned that the prelude to Julius Caesar was Gaius Marius and his successor Lucius Cornelius Sulla.
Pompey the Great and Crassus were aiders and abetors of Caesar's rise to power. Both Marius and Sulla failed to save the Roman Republic. Both men like many of their contemporaries in the Senate sought fame, wealth, and power at the expense of the values of the Republic and it's general welfare. Force was becoming more and more prevalent as was injustice. By the time we get to the era of the first Triumvirate the decline of the Roman Republic was in full swing on a downward slope and not enough consequential people cared to try to stop it.
Both Julius Caesar and Octavian Augustus could have tried to save the Republic but chose not to do so. [In fairness to Julius, who was assassinated by false republicans Brutus and fellow Senators, Caesar may not have had a chance to restore the republic. But his making himself dictator for life rather than a term of years did not bode well for his character or that of the Republic. ]

Review: Gaius Marius was a highly significant figure in the waning decades of the Roman Republic, although calling him a savior may be a bit too much. His military successes were considerable as were his reforms of the army, but the rivalry and enmity between Marius and Sulla and their willingness to go against Roman traditions and laws set a pattern that would be followed by Pompey and Julius Caesar and would bring about the end of the Republic. Hyden has written a commendable biography of Marius beginning with his origins, his early successes in Spain and Northern Africa,through his rise to power, and his ultimate fall. He is a tragic figure in many ways, a man of great abilities and achievements whose overweening ambition, egotism and envy brought about his own destruction. This biography reads like a well plotted novel, with action (emphasis on military matters and warfare) and fascinating if frightening characters. What novelist could create characters to equal Metellus, Sulla, Sartorius, Cinna and a host of others. There are lessons to be learned from the history of the end of the Republic, specifically what happens when ambitious men disregard laws and traditions to further their own ends, especially when they resort to the basest sort of demagoguery. At the end one wonders if Marius was insane and that this led to the horrendous bloodlust. Even Sulla must have been maddened by his gross illness and the accompnaying pain.

Review: Marc Hyden and I became friends a few years ago through a shared interest in public policy, and earlier this year he came to speak at a meeting of a non-profit I have chaired since 2009. His topic was, "New Rome: Can America Escape the Roman Republic's fate?" During his two-hour presentation, which included ample time for Q&A throughout, Marc weaved together the threads of the Roman Republic's history, decline, and fall with America's current state of affairs. At the time of his presentation I had started his book, but finished it a couple weeks later and wanted to write a review because Marc's gifts as a writer are as impressive as are his gifts as a speaker.

Over the years I have been quite interested in Roman history, but what I appreciated most about "Gaius Marius" is that it clearly focused on the series of events that culminated in the fall of the Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire. Gaius Marius, the central figure of the book, is depicted as a man of great talents who played a critical role in these events, but who was symptomatic of the many factors that lead to the fall. What stood out for me was how centralization of power, which was condoned by the Roman people, lead to the abuse of power that accelerated the fall.

"Gaius Marius" is both interesting and instructive, and Marc Hyden's ability to turn a phrase made me want to turn each page. The book is well-researched, but the information is not presented as just a series of dry facts. For those who appreciate learning Roman history from an author who will make you think, this book is for you and I highly recommend it.

Title: Non Academic Approach

Review: If you are looking for a beginners guide to Gaius Marius, this is a decent book. However, I was expecting a much more academic style. The author attributes feelings, reasonings, beliefs & thoughts where there is virtually no contemporary evidence to substantiate it. The book also has 0 maps, which for the target audience (obviously beginners) will make it very difficult to understand many segments of the book, especially battles. I didn't like how the author chose to end this 'biography' either. Marius dies with still around 70 pages left in the book & for whatever reason (filler?) the author chose to attempt to cover the entire historical period up to Caesar Augustus.

This book just wasn't what I was expecting. If you are looking for a pure non biased academic study of Marius this is not it. He is covered much better by Adrian Goldsworthy in several of his books.
