Title: Reads like a great novel!

Review: The City Game is a beautifully written, non-stop adventure chronicling the American college basketball point-shaving scandal from 1949-52. But the book is so much more. This historical non-fiction account is so well crafted that it reads like a great novel. The character development of the players, the coaches, the New York City mobsters and corrupt police and politicians, makes this book one of the best of 2019 in any genre. In short, you do not need to be a basketball fan to love this book. Mr. Goodman's insight into the melting-pot that was City College of New York, a top-notch and free educational mecca for immigrants, African-Americans and Jews who were denied admission to the nation's elite universities, is compelling and fascinating. Mr. Goodman writes so well that I was excited by his re-telling of college basketball games, even when I already knew the outcome. The City Game presents a vivid picture of post-WWII New York, where abundance and greed and the pursuit of the mighty dollar chewed up and spit out innocence and youth, most often with extreme personal consequences. There is so much of this book that still resonates today, in sports and in life. If you liked The Boys in the Boat, you'll love The City Game.

Review: Each of the starters of the City College Beavers – two black and three Jewish scholar / athletes from “a tuition free, merit based college in Harlem” - rose from struggling, immigrant families in NYC. And yet in 1949-50, against all odds, the poor, working class boys attending “Harvard-on-Hudson” became national champions; “the most celebrated basketball players” in America. These unlikely sports heroes, the living fulfillment of the American Dream, were lionized, their pictures splashed on the covers of every local newspaper after crushing “powerhouse state schools” with WASP players who'd traditionally held the winning titles, almost as a birthright. But the glory, as Goodman beautifully and evocatively recounts, did not last. “Suddenly, shockingly,” the boys who were the pride of every New Yorker were “exposed to public ridicule and disgrace;” “fallen idols” immersed in a point shaving scandal that rocked college basketball. Goodman's masterful account weaves several stories together, including a top secret investigation of widespread police payoffs, rampant gambling on college basketball, and greedy “fixers” who sought an edge by cynically luring vulnerable city kids who stashed the money away for their families and their futures. Players just had to “reduce the margin of victory below the point spread;” the spread determined by bookmakers and posted in most of the daily newspapers. (Gamblers could win even on a losing team as long as the score was closer than the spread.) Everyone else was making out, the boys were told. Why shouldn't you? “This was just the way things worked in the city, this was the real game,” - the city game - “and you were naïve and foolish to imagine otherwise.” And besides, they didn't have to lose the gam. Just miss a few shots. Reluctantly, many college players went along, succumbing to peer pressure and ignoring conscience. It was a decision they would always regret. An array of colorful Damon Runyon-like characters are memorably brought to life – the team's legendary coach, Nat Holman, a crusading DA, the “gangsters, bookies and crooked politicians” he pursued. However, two teammates, close friends and exemplary role models in their communities – one Jewish, one Black - remain at the heart of a heartbreaking story. Eddie Roman and Floyd Layne knew what they did was wrong and yet were “caught up in the scandal...” that resulted in their very public arrests. They would spend their lives “searching for a path to personal redemption.” Goodman paints a vivid picture of early 1950s New York, including the excitement of cheering crowds dressed to the nines packed together in Madison Square Garden where most of the games were played and broadcast on the radio, and carefree summers in the Jewish resorts of the Catskills where many college players worked and made a little money playing exhibition games. The City Game is both exhilarating and sad. Goodman beautifully captures a lost moment in time when illusions were shattered and innocence was lost.

Review: Having read Goodman's Eighty Days, I was eager to read The City Game. Goodman is a master prose writer with brilliant pacing and he is adept at creating past worlds. His extensive research not only recreates the past but teaches us in the present. Even if you don’t like ball (I don't follow it myself), you will be on edge reading his descriptions and visualizing the games, but this is more than a book about basketball. It is a book about race, class, triumph and destruction. You will visit this time in New York and read about exposure along the lines of Serpico. You will learn where the phrase “in like Flynn” originated. Corruption is a major theme in The City Game as is the rise and fall of the underdog and extensive injustice. Through riveting revelations about corruption and those thrown under the train, you will develop understanding and empathy for these players as you reflect on Old New York and what has and has not changed.
