"In this thought-provoking, handsomely illustrated book, Italian neurobiologist Stefano Mancuso considers the fundamental differences between plants and animals and challenges our assumptions about which is the β€˜higher’ form of life.” β€”The Wall Street Journal

β€œFascinating…full of optimism…this quick, accessible read will appeal to anyone with interest in how plants continue to surprise us.” β€”Library Journal

All my life I live among plants, in my studies and in practice. I am an agronomist, I am a farmer (mainly fruit trees plantations), I am a gardener, I am a nature lover. In my relations with plants I listen to them, I respond to their requests, and I enjoy their appreciation that they express for the care that they get.
Reading this book helped me to better understand the plants spirit behind their behavior, even under gravity conditions. The book demonstrates how plants genius is based on sense capability that is far greater than any we had imagined. Capability of plants to adjust themselves to changing conditions found on earth and even outside earth, "masters of resistance and adaptation".
Like the author who could not sleep the night after returning from his weightlessness mission, when I have finished reading, I had a pleasant sensation into the context of the book and sat immediately to express my personal appreciation to the quality (content, presentation, illustrations) of this edition which certainly reflects Prof. Stefano Mancuso's love to the subject.

Title: Insightful and Brilliant

Review: This book is easy to read, logical in its subdivisions, and the typography is pleasing to the eye. Photographs are splendid. The author is an original thinker and opens new ways of thinking about plants, their structures, activities, and essential role in the existence of all life on earth.

Title: Not as technically detailed as I was expecting, but very readable

Review: I'm sure this book is a 5 star for some people, but I was a bit let down by dearth of technical and experimental information about "the revolutionary genius of plants", and the amount of personal anecdotes and reminiscences. Still, this is a very interersting book for someone (like me) with little to no prior knowledge of the science of plants. The content continually departs from the titled topic as the book progresses until we are reading about robotics and space travel. This is a very well written book and quite easy to read.

Title: Completely changed my perspective on plants!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2019
Review: I have an advanced degree in science and have taught upper level science classes for awhile and it was so refreshing to read a book with new insights into our understanding of plants. It seems as if there's been a paradigm shift in just over 150 years because many of the major contributions and understandings of plants occurred awhile ago and so now the only real discoveries that are highlighted in the mainstream press or science magazines are about how plants can assist us medicinally. This book reminds us of the power plants have, their unique abilities that are stunning and triggers a wonderment and "wow" factor readers. The pictures and the style make it a very easy read and you can easily knock it out in a few days. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be sharing many of the insights from the book with my students!

Title: Very interesting, not too in depth

Review: This is a pretty good book, it will open your eyes to some behaviors of plants. However, it doesn’t go into much detail and gets off topic onto stories the author thinks is cool, which were usually a little interesting but I wish there was more detailed science. The discussion about thinking of plants a collective intelligence systems rather than individual is pretty cool! It is a quick read i would say go for it it is definitely worth the 6-8 hours it takes to read it.

Title: Well-written, containing lots of information

Review: But I beg to disagree with the author's definition of "intelligence." That plants can communicate using volatile, airborne chemicals (in animals they're called pheromones) is impressive, and that their growth toward light is mediated by production and degradation of growth-promoting hormones is impressive also, but not, I contend, a mark of "intelligence." Rather, these are stereotyped, preprogrammed responses. "Memory," manifest as a plant "remembering" to respond to a stimulus if challenged before, or a venus flytrap closing only after the 3rd "tap" merely represents simple thresholds. For those interested in "intelligence," I'd strongly recommend "Vehicles" by Braitenberg, which after a few decades out of print, is now available again. THAT book is worth reading.
