Review: In addition to being one of the authorities on usability, Eric Reiss writes beautifully and his passion for good, usable design is evident throughout the book and highly contagious.

In this easy to read and incredibly thorough book, Reiss accompanies the reader on an exploration of good and bad design practices and teaches us how to recognize, avoid and remedy common and not-so-obvious usability issues. The book is chock-full of examples and case studies which clearly demonstrate general principles of usability and specific guidelines alike.

The content is organized clearly in two main sections, "Ease of Use" and "Elegance and Clarity" and every chapter contains helpful references to further reading and a glossary of term and/or concept to explore in order to gain additional insight into any given issue. I find myself referring to these references over and over, and I have gone as far as and passing them along to clients in order to further illustrate a point.

However, what sets "Usable Usability" apart from most other books on usability is the attention devoted to both the digital and physical realm. As the practice of UX has evolved in the direction of creating truly cross-channel experiences, Reiss' book is uniquely positioned to address the specific challenges that UX/UI designers face on a daily basis when dealing with experiences that span different domains.

If you are serious about good design and usability, this is the one resource you will continue referring to.

Review: As someone who works with a wide range of clients, some of whom are still complaining about their VCR clock blinking, I found this book to be a valuable addition to my arsenal. The information is presented in an engaging format, and the topics include real-life examples and anecdotes, so much more effective than made-up scenarios. If you need an overview of usability, this book will get you up-to-speed. If you are a seasoned practitioner, the reading is like having an in-depth conversation with the author. I enjoyed the observations and side comments, it made the subject matter more alive. The author's experience and knowledge is evident.

Review: Don Norman wrote a book about the usability of everyday things a long time ago and it was good. However, as Eric Reiss demonstrates in his splendid "Usable Usability," the Norrman book was far from definitive. Eric finds that there is a lot left to be said about usability in the worlds around us, the real world and the virtual one. Eric brings a critical eye to the everyday things that Don missed and many more. He deconstructs issues and presents prescriptive, practical and effective solutions. I have marked up my copy for quick, and frequent reference. I will recommend this book to anyone, inside or outside of the usability/information architecture fields, who interested in making their products better and their world a little less frustrating.

Review: Why are you reading reviews when you could be reading this book?!! Eric Reiss did an exceptional job writing Usable Usability: Simple Steps for Making Stuff Better. He gives a topic and why certain designs / functions should be along a certain path. Filled with perfectly explained examples of best cases and worst cases you feel like your discovering a new world with him. I read it on the Kindle iPhone app and felt like I should just highlight the entire book because it was so incredible! If not for yourself do it for your clients, friends, and family. Help the world become more usable with Eric's wisdom.

Review: I think the book using examples of Internet Explore is quite outdated. The content is nothing new for the advanced so it's like a revision of the past internet development. But the good thing is to remind us to think about the illogic in the surrounding.

Review: I hate to say it, because I really wanted to like the book & author, but I found Usable Usability to be pretty boring and obvious. The author meanders and points out either painfully obvious or uncommon examples that don't do much to educate the reader. It might be good for an absolute beginner, but if you've done any work in usability this book will be too basic for you. I was left quite disappointed.
