Marcus, a.k.a "w1n5t0n," is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system worksโ€“and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school's intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.

But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they're mercilessly interrogated for days.

Title: 1984 for n00bs (very minor spoiler alert)

Review: I'll admit that I'm an English teacher for a love for dystopian literature, so let's face it...I was going to like this book regardless. But I will say that I really enjoyed this novel. It's well-written, fast-paced, and the characters are complex and relatable. It's definitely written for young adults (I'd say ages 12-18), but not to the exclusion of adults. A huge component of the plot and setting revolves around computers and the internet, so if you're at all involved with that arena, this book will be familiar territory for you. There are some really specific references that I wonder about how they'll hold up over time - for example, are we still going to be using Firefox as a browser in 10 years? But still, feels very current and definitely a great way to bridge the gap between modern American society and Orwellian dystopian fiction. My two minor critiques are these: first, the ending is really sudden and really Hollywood-ish. It is NOT "He loved Big Brother" in tone. Second, the book is written for a specific demographic - young nerds. I teach inner city kids in Boston and they would have a hard time relating to some of the whiter/geekier aspects of the novel. Not to say it wouldn't be worth introducing them to this book, but still, it feels a little "White & Nerdy", if I may borrow from Weird Al. Overall, I loved the book and have been forcing it on all my friends since I finished it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys raising serious questions about the balance between safety and personal freedom.

Title: If you have a reluctant teenage reader in your household, give them this book

Review: I bought this book for my 14yo โ€œI donโ€™t wanna readโ€ son and he stayed up all night โ€” LITERALLY THE ENTIRE NIGHT โ€” to finish it. I didnโ€™t know whether to be proud of him or furious at him. So yeah if you have a reluctant teenage reader in your household, give them this book.

Title: prescient
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2013
Review: As I'm writing this, in the early summer of 2013, I'm amazed at how relevant Doctorow's Little Brother is to recent events, to the Boston Marathon Bombings and to the revelations that the N.S.A. has secretly been collecting data on all the transactions and communications people conduct electronically.
For anyone who's interested in current events, and for anyone who has any interest at all in protecting our Fourth Amendment rights, this book is a must read.
Like Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four, Doctorow's Little Brother is frightening and prescient. And it's a call-to-arms for all those who are concerned about the erosion of their constitutional rights in the name of safety and security.
And just coincidentally, the book happens to be well-written and the story is gripping. It's one of those books that one doesn't want to put down.
Although the book is supposedly for "young adults", it doesn't read like "a children's book".

Title: Awesome Read!! Recommended!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2015
Review: Little Brother is definitely worth the read. It is inspiring as Marcus fails and seems like he has lost, he doesnโ€™t give up. This teaches perseverance and dedication. If you are a computer person, this book is a good choice for you! It has a lot of technological components that have the potential to be very interesting if you are involved with technology. If you are not a computer person, like myself, parts of the novel may be boring or confusing but Doctorow explains the tech aspects very well and helps the reader understand what Marcus is doing, I also learned a lot from this. The plot does sometimes jump around a lot but the story line and character development makes up for this and the sometimes boring โ€œtech talkโ€. I found myself wanting to read and also very intrigued in the characters. Tension builds throughout the novel, which leads to a very eventful climax. I recommend this book mainly to the teenage reader, like myself, because they can relate to Marcus well. Overall I do recommend this book to majority of people but mainly to people who like computer science and to teenagers.

Title: What it is like to grow up in San Francisco
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2012
Review: A smart young high school student is witness to a terrorist attack in San Francisco. It changes his life (and those of all the residents of the town) immediately, and the war on terrorism may be much worse than the act itself. I loved the sense of place and the description of the teen mind at work. I found myself staying up late to finish and wishing I could afford to send a copy to all the teenagers I know. Loved it.

Title: A Book for All Ages
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2014
Review: This is enjoyable book written from the slant of a bright teenager. It brings up a large number of points that intents of our actions are not always as we intend for them to be. I think that the book is likely very much under appreciated in many of its insights are seldom thought about. I would recommend it for all ages, not just youth or sci-fi affectioneers.

Review: I didn't get to read this but my 13 year old son loved it and is already begging me to buy the second one! My husband liked It too. My son hasn't enjoyed reading in a long time, he just wants to play video games all the time. I'm so happy I found a series to get him reading again.

Title: This book is phenominal
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2016
Review: This is, and always will be, my favorite book. (Okay, it's tied with the Harry Potter series and The Count of Monte Cristo, but still). I absolutely adore this book. And, I work in a book store, so whenever someone comes up to me with a request for a recomendation, I always take them over to the shelf that holds this book. Cory Doctorow is a phenominal writer, and because of it, I've purchased all of his books. I love, love, love this book.
