William Alexander Anderson "Bigfoot" Wallace (April 3, 1817 β January 7, 1899) was a famous Texas Ranger who took part in many of the military conflicts of the Republic of Texas and the United States in the 1840s, including the MexicanβAmerican War.
John Duval, fellow Texas Ranger and Wallaceβs best friend, gives a thrilling but factual account of the manβs life in a simple but engaging narrative style, combining action, suspense, and dry Texan humor. Wallaceβs hairbreadth escapes and larger-than-life story are the perfect representation of the Old West in all its perils, comedy, and romance.
Later we see Big Foot Wallace as a ranger and a soldier against Mexico. He is captured and some men are sentenced to be executed by Santa Anna. They draw black and white beans. If black they are killed. Luckily Wallace draws a white bean and after a few years as a prisoner is released.
We see him in New Orleans getting used to city life. Then he gets news he is to report to Virginia to get part of an inheritance.
Later he tries his hand at farming on 200 acres he bought and built a small ranch house. He hates farming.I won't ruin the ending for you.
Here is a good book showing true stories of Texas frontier life, Indian fighting and soldering against Mexico and much more. An interesting classic. Anyone interested in the Old West will like this book. 4 stars.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Good book for a snapshot of a different time

Review: A very frank description of life in a different time, use of the language and all. Bigfoot was there for many events that shaped Texas after 1836. I use to hunt near Bigfoot, TX as a kid, but never read much about him until the town came up at work and got me thinking.
The main take away for me is that we are all a bunch of soft, uh... wimps... compared to how it used to be, especially in Texas. It took a ruthless group to deal with the original inhabitants of Texas. Hard to believe the difference of 150ish years.
Some things are the same; even Bigfoot felt there were too many people in Texas, back in the mid 1800s. Also had me wanting to try bear meat and honey, funny enough. If you like Texas history, give it a read, it's a different kind of history book.

Review: Fascinating writing by two contemporaries of the "old west". Makes one appreciate the toughness & adventureous of our pioneer forbears--and how easy we have it in these modern days.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars A fine history recorded without modern political correctness

Review: A fine history recorded without modern political correctness. Those familiar with the South Texas region will recognize most of the towns, rivers and
other place names. A different view of the Mier Expedition. The Texans could have whipped the Mexicans but for a ruse. Our ancestors were some tough hombres.
It is interesting that folks such as Wallace, with probably no more than an elementary school education, had greater command of English and classic literature that today's college graduate.

Review: Almost as if Larry McMurtry had written the stories with its strong characterizations and narrow escapes of the protagonist. It is difficult to determine though with many of the stories whether they are accurate recollections or whether they are just great 'yarns'.
I have given four stars in spite of the fact that the text is an exact OCR scan of the original with no attempt by the author of proof reading or for that matter even letting a word processing software program perform a spelling and grammar check. The contents of the book out weight its many typographical flaws.
I do give the potential reader a WARNING that this book was written long ago and records the true feelings of the subject. If a reader is susceptible to presentism then this will be a very uncomfortable read.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Not what was expected

Review: I guess I was expecting to hear a story about Big Foot Wallace and his times around Texas was a Ranger. There was very little f that and just a bunch of fabricated stories about Mexican jails and such. I try to finish al the books I start but this one was a struggle.
