Review: I love the world of Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series so when I discovered that there was a graphic novel that coincided with her first novel in the series I had to jump up and get it. I am not terribly familiar with graphic novels and my review will probably reflect this.

The storyline is basically that a young girl mechanic runs her own shop in the Tri-cities area of Washington state. She is not just a mechanic, but also a rare coyote shifter. Mercy is not alone because there is a whole supernatural community of fae, wolves, witches and vampires hiding in plain sight from the humans- well with the exception of the fae who are out of the supernatural closet.

Mercy, is approached by a teenage boy for a job. She should turn him away because he's obviously a runaway, but her sensitive more-than-human nose tells her that he is a newly turned werewolf and she takes pity on him. Mercy's action of taking in Mac sets a whole slew of events in motion that end up with shadowy agents tracking down Mac, with Mercy's neighbor the local wolf alpha getting attacked in his home and having his daughter kidnapped and then Mercy's adventures trying to get the girl back while being forced to confront people from her past.

This story is broken into two volumes with this first half ending right where Mercy and her accomplices are heading out from Montana back to Washington to solve to find Jessie, Adam's daughter. There is also a story short in the back that is a prequel of sorts showing how Mac came to be a werewolf.

First of all, the whittling down of the storyline from the original novel was well done. It covered all the salient points both in plot line and dialogue even though it was obviously a huge reduction in words letting the graphics tell much of the story too. Now that being said, I did get confused a few times like in the beginning when the story started out with one scene and then went back to explain how we got there. Personally, I think it would have been better just to stick to a chronological storyline. While confusing, it didn't detract too much, but I could see places where if I hadn't read the novel I would be somewhat confused about the world building behind the story.

Now as to the illustrations, they were wonderful. I had a picture in my mind of what the characters looked like and if my imaginary characters were drawn it would have been pretty close. I loved the detail in facial expression and in the portrayal of movement.

For the fan of the Mercy Thompson series, I think this would be a real treat and a fun experience to see the characters in graphic format and 'see' the story unfold. For someone who has never read the original novels, it might be alright, but the experience would be so much less so I heartily recommend reading the Moon Called novel first.

Review: The story is pretty good. It's almost exactly to the book, but the artwork keeps throwing me off. Its not bad artwork at all by itself, but for the characters of books I've read and loved for years it just doesn't match up.

Its kind of like having a friend get a caricature picture done for them where the picture has some similarities, but not enough to really look like them. Maybe the hair color is mostly the same, body build is different and exaggerated, and the clothes look sometimes like them, but often just not like them at all. I don't know, its kinda weird for me.

I don't hate it, but its not them.

Review: These short graphic novels that hit the high points of Moon Called would make a good introduction to the world Patricia Briggs has created. David Lawrence has written an interesting story that remains true to the novel. The art is well done and I particularly like how Mercy is drawn. Though she does look younger than I had pictured her in my imagination.

In the first volume, Mercy takes in a new young werewolf named Mac who tells a horrifying story about how he came to be a werewolf. But it isn't long before the werewolves he was running from catch up to him. He is killed, Adam is wounded and Jesse is kidnapped. Mercy is forced to take Adam home with her to Bran to get him the help he needs even though it also forces her to confront Samuel about their past.

In the second volume, Mercy, Adam and Samuel come back to the Tri-Cities to try to locate and rescue Jesse and to figure out what is going on with the invading werewolves. There is a lot of story to condense in the second volume and occasionally the pacing seemed rushed. However, it might encourage readers to pick up the novel to get some of the detail that just can't fit into the graphic novel format. I know looking at and reading this one has made me eager to re-read Moon Called myself.

I recommend these to graphic novel fans. The story and the art were both done well.

Review: I have been wanting to pick up the Mercy Thompson books, having heard they'd be right up my alley, but my TBR is so long, I'm not sure when I'll actually get around to it. So, when I saw this adaptation of the first Mercy Thompson novel, Moon Called, was available on Kindle Unlimited, I decided I'd go ahead & give it a try. I have mixed feelings about the result. While it was enjoyable enough, I definitely feel like it's something that I would've liked better had I been familiar with the original work. It seemed very obvious that a lot had to be cut out or condensed to make it all fit into this version of the story. And while it was easy enough to follow & figure out what was going on, character development & worldbuilding suffered quite a lot. Characters just kind of pop up out of nowhere without any clear explanation, leaving me more often than not with the just a vague feeling rather than true understanding of their relationships with Mercy. I found the art underwhelming as well. I don't know if it's just me but I felt like everything had sort of a greenish tint too it. I tend to enjoy graphic novels whose artists include detailed backgrounds & distinctly individual characters that are easily distinguished between. In this GN, several of the characters were so similar looking that I had to go back multiple times to keep them straight & discover what felt off. Overall, I thought this graphic novel was on the underwhelming side. I am going to continue with the second half since it is free & I like to finish what I started, but I'm not going to hold my breath that it will improve on what I dislike. I still intend to read the original novels; you can feel their potential simmering under watch the mediocre surface of the graphic novel, though it misses the mark.
