Review: The narrator of Hamburger’s new novel, suburban teenager Ari Silverman, is struggling to consciously realize he is gay in the early 1990’s. Before he can fully come out even to himself, the boy from across the street, Mark, rapes him in his own home.
Ari struggles up from the kitchen floor and hits the alarm system’s panic button. The sirens send Mark running and bring the police. Later, in the police station, the Silverman family learns Mark's statement is that Ari didn't fight him off so he must have wanted it. Mark avoids prison and instead is sent to a boarding school in Toronto, but Ari is still terrified of the house across the street. This is one of the many ways this trauma infiltrates every aspect of Ari's life, who ends up having to change schools, see a therapist, and take karate lessons he doesn’t like.
At his new school, his first friend is Justin, a black boy with a relaxed voice and deep brown eyes. After school one day, Ari confides to Justin that he hates karate.
"Then don't go," Justin says, and he takes Ari to the art room which he unlocks with a spare key. They spin on the metal stools and talk, and Justin puts on a mixed tape. This is the first time Ari has heard Nirvana, and Cobain’s voice strikes him as “both tired and anxious, as if he’d been ignored all his life and was finally sick of it.”
Ari falls in love with both Justin and Nirvana, and the two intertwine as the novel progresses and end up absorbing Ari’s attention.
But this twin crush Ari develops doesn’t save him from his trauma. Months after ‘the incident,’ as he calls the rape when speaking with his therapist, another new friend asks Ari if he knows Mark. This throws him into a panic, and he hides in the bathroom, where he has something of a meltdown, during which he has a fantasy where he rapes another boy.
The power of this novel is how the emotional roller coaster always goes one level further than you think your stomach can stand, and yet you make it through, often laughing at Ari’s quick, cutting wit. After the rape, Ari’s family “becomes preoccupied with the subject of girls. Dad pointed out the lips, hips, asses, even boobs of girls on TV, as if teaching me to recognize the markings of a rare species of butterfly.”
Ari finds ways of dealing with the trauma, but the novel does a superb job of showing how rape survivors continue to have to deal with this violation long afterwards, and how teenage survivors in particular have to find their way back to a healthy sexuality.
At the same time, the narrator’s wit and poignancy often overlap in exquisite ways, such as when the principal at his new school calls Ari into his office and tries to make him feel more comfortable by sharing such pearls of wisdom as “They say when a bone breaks, it’s stronger in the place that heals than before it was broken.” At the end of their conversation, Ari thinks, “That’s right… I’m tough. Tough as a broken bone.”
Aaron Hamburger’s Nirvana Is Here is a tumultuous, tragic, comic, and always engrossing exploration of what it means to live through teenage sexual trauma, a must-read at any point in our cultural history but particularly at this moment. This helps to explain why this novel, even so early after its publication date, is high on Amazon’s chart for “LGBT Coming of Age Fiction.”

Title: The Best novel of 2019 So Far

Review: As a survivor of two different male sexual assaults of my youth, I was immediately drawn into this novel and its portrayal of Ari Silverman, both as a teenager and as an adult. Reading the book, I realized that there are very few novels written about male sexual assault and how it affects the victim, especially as the effects can last a lifetime. One of the many strengths of this fine novel is how it uses humor and irony to offset the trauma its main character experiences. Although I grew up in the 1970s and not in the 1990s, I totally related to Ari's emotional states as he passes through his high school years with the help of Kurt Cobain's music. The novel is also interesting in the way it portrays race relations and Detroit (and its public/private schools) in the 1990s. I encourage everyone to pick up this novel and immerse themselves in Ari's world.

Title: Fantastic, Courageous and Timely Book

Review: I loved this book. One aspect that really impresses me and inspires me is the feeling I got while reading of how important this story is for Hamburger to tell—it feels like the one book he just had to write, the one he would write if he could only write one, the deep story he has dreamed of turning into a novel for years and years. I don’t know if that’s true, but that’s the feeling I got. And in my experience, writing that kind of book is so difficult and intimidating because of how important and sacred that particular story is to the writer. But Hamburger did it, and he's still young! He made it look easy, though that does not mean it was easy at all. Bravo!

This book reads with suspense, humor, excitement, and deep emotion--and it is certainly timely.

Review: NIRVANA IS HERE is powerful and poignant, yet at the same time a darkly comic and compelling page-turner. I literally could not put NIRVANA down during one rainy reading-day at the beach-

Aaron Hamburger is a wise and witty observer of the human comedy as his characters rummage about recklessly in a ‘box marked FRAGILE.’

I love the back and forth structure, such a brilliant juxtaposition of the past and present storylines!  Ari, the sharp-eyed and utterly convincing main character, takes the reader on a journey into his past encounter with sexual abuse and his present dilemma as he sits in judgement on an academic board pondering the fate of his ex-husband.

A completely contemporary tale of self-discovery, NIRVANA IS HERE truly is nirvana for readers who love complex expertly drawn characters, a bold narrative engagement with thorny moral issues and the timeless lure of a well-told tale. NIRVANA is ‘all that’— highly recommended!

Review: Ari, the protagonist and narrator of Nirvana Is Here, is a gem. He comes to life for us on every page as we experience his journey through trauma and selfhood. We care deeply about him, rooting for him the whole way. Part of Hamburger's skill as a writer is in the way he also makes us experience the bigger picture – that is, we see quite clearly what Ari is up against, and how society, at least as it is currently configured, corners folks. This is a beautiful book. Savor it for its humor, its humanity, and its lesson in how to not just recover from wounds but thrive.

Review: Regardless of your particular identity struggle in a world that typically rewards conformity and punishes difference, Hamburger gently sweeps you into the compelling tale of a human, once as a teenager and then again as an adult, searching for the path that will lead him to his authentic self. Constantly berated by the narrow socialization process that forces many people to live a life unfilled, Hamburger’s protagonist finds his true self by surviving abuse, being kind-hearted, and taking risks by continuously reaching out into an often antagonistic world, until he discovers the truth of his own right to be himself. By the end of this engrossing page-turner, readers too, will reflect upon their own path to self-discovery and perhaps reconsider whether or not their life now is truly the one they desire.
